Hi all,
after looking around at all the options, the admiral has decided
that this is where she would prefer to stay next winter. As I like to cruise, I like to keep her happy. Is there anyone here who is spending this winter there and would like to converse? any other info is also welcome.

Don't fancy it.
It is a nice marina with good onshore facilities like a small supermarket, chandelries , retaurants, estate agents etc but immediately outsisde the marina------nothing. In fact less than nothing as it looks like a rather rough neighbourhood which is popular with Romans on summer weekends but in the winter...nothing.
Transport to Rome in the summer is geared to the beach life but in the winter it will be less frequent.
Thats my pennyworth but you should look at the scruffier surroundings at the Fiumicino Canal which is within walking distance of a nice lively little town.

I agree. we had our boat there for a month last spring. the supermarket on site is pitiiful with no stcok and absolutely outrageous prices. Restauraunts on site also pretty poor IMHO and outside marina - as you say, nothing. although a couple of v. cheap and useful Lidl type supermarkets.
OP will have a long winter. Nettuno about 15 miles south at least has a busy little town on the doorstep.

PTR wasn't for us -- very expensive, isolated and horrid. We left after ten days and are now happily moored on the Fiumicino canal. In previous years there had been a fair liveaboard winter community, I believe, but don't think so this year....credit crunch seems to have affected many spots this winter.

I would advise strongly against using it.

When I visited in 2006, the swell came in through the entrance, there was a problem of petty crime (since reduced), no liveaboard community and little of interest in the immediate vicinity of the marina, though the facilities on the marina are quite good.

Like Lemain I spent the winter at Fiumicino at about 1/3 the price, with an amusing, lively local community.

I'm sure, however, that your shoulders are broad enough to take her blame for having chosen Porto Turistico

hi would agree its a dead end place.
we spent winter further down the coast in Gaeta however maybe full still worth a try, we got in ok as we are CA members, this did make a difference.
Gaeta has good town, good links for sightseeing & flights back to uk. By train it is 1hr to Rome or Naples

all good advice, Fiumicino is a good place to reach your boat in winter if you have to go home a bit, free bus to the airport leonardo about 5 minutes trip.Parc Leonardo a different location, big shopping centre,NO 5 Bus outside fishmongers near bascule bridge.Ostia difficult for eating out except on marina.Fiumicino has ssuper little family restaurants and takeaways.good wintering to all.

Hi Paul, they stopped the Sostitutivo (free bus to the airport) on December 16th to save costs....the day we were flying to the UK /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif No warning at all and I did check times etc. on the stop the day before. I used the Marriot shuttle bus but now they have stopped non-residents from using that.

So now, to get to the airport, you can use the Cotral bus €1.20 just outside but beyond Emme Piu Supermarket, direct, or you can take the Local authority bus to Parco Leonardo €1 then the train from PL to Fiumicino airport €1. Or a taxi from €11 to €40 depending on the time of day and the mood of the driver. Taxis work well -- you call the radio taxi firm and they do speak some English. We seldom use them but on the odd occasion they are useful.

Hey that's bad news about the sostituvo bus, is that pemanent? Taxi from the airport has cost me between 5 euros and 11 euros to the boatyard as you say seems to depend on their mood. Also, you cant get any taxi oh no! you have to go for the small (local) taxi which pulls up by the sos bus at the airport. I have been forced to taxi on occasions because I would swear blind the driver guns the bus away as soon as he sees me emerge from the airport. Goin the other way, At the council offices I would resort to hiding behind one of the pillars until the bus doors opened and then leap on. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Yes, they say it's permanent but then again Italian democracy works better than ours...the sos only came into being after the rail link was axed, after public pressure. Anyway, for the time being it does not run.

There are two Cotral bays at the airport. You want the dirty bus. They have given up changing the indicator boards in the last few months so you HAVE to ask the driver. When I caught the bus last week, I carry Cotral tickets in my wallet, I had no problem but another person wanted to get to Fiumicino and was turned away for having no ticket, the driver wouldn't sell one and sent him into the airport to buy one....then she drove off!!! The only passengers on the bus were very local-looking and I got the impression that they don't exactly encourage wealthy tourists like us to use basic buses at €1.20 when they can fleece us of €12 to €20 to keep their countrymen in the style to which they have become accustomed /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Buy your tickets up front. If anyone would like Cotral tickets sent, email me to the spamgourmet address below, and I will post them to Blighty for you. The Cotral bus timetable is online -- google cotral or if you can't find it I can email a pdf.

Hi David, So much for the promise of bus sustitutivo in perpetuity for the locals as compo for bending the rail tracks in the direction of the Airport!
Thanks for the updated info, will be very useful for those landing on these shores this coming year. Hope the bascule bridge is opening again as this is a major pain if it goes out of action when a cruise is scheduled to begin. Good wintering in Roma.Still getting good value from my overcoat bought near the Spanish Steps for a very reasonable price. Did draw a few laughs as I paraded in front of the shop mirror in my shorts, hairy legs and overcoat! looked a bit suspect I guess!Sports jacket tried on looked even more bizarre, not a bargain at €700, left it behind! Good wintering, snow here but fairly clear around south Dublin Bay.Other parts not so lucky.bye for now.

Paul, the lifting bridge is being given a major overhaul this winter. They did the mechanics and the roadway from Nov to Jan and now at night they are are stripping off all the old WW2 rendering presumably to re-render it. It is opening fine now, on a limited winter timetable. When we arrived they struggled to get it to open and close but now it works fine.

The fishing fleet is going out more often these days so the locals are happy. Lots of activity all along the canal side.

Hi Lemain, Glad the fisherfolk are busy. I remember helping them rig tyres on wire rope during a bad storm to fender themselves whilst the concrete quayside came off in lumps. The whole canal was filled across with trawlers as all had to take refuge, up as far as Comar and the Guardia Costiera offices. When the sea is up in this area it is no go and P Turistico entrance fills with sand, not cleared until springtime. I have had no problem with the entrance to the Fiumicino in fresh conditions onshore, but depths may change after big storms also.Bye for now
