Hello - reflecting on the potential VAT advantages of being outside the EU, does anyone have any experience of keeping their boat in Montenegro? Porto Montenegro looks very nice online. How easy it it to rent a 16m berth there? What’s the rough annual cost? Is there decent infrastructure for maintenance and repair?

Having just sold my share in a P62 in Mallorca, looking at buying a late P54 or early P52, so the challenge there would be finding an ex VAT boat. But having done all my boating in the Balearics, have no knowledge of Montenegro.

Did a reccy there about five years ago and was impressed. Large, smart new marina which seemed very well designed. Plenty of great restaurants and upmarket retail opportunities, if you like that sort of thing - reminded me a bit of an oversized Port Adriano. I got a quote for an 18m boat which came in at around €16k iirc. Not sure about maintenance and repair suppliers but my guess would be there would be plenty of options. Cheap fuel, of course (being ex tax) and the whole Croatian archipelago on your doorstep. Flying in and out not entirely straightforward as I think direct flights are quite limited and summer only - so that needs looking into.

we / our Boat's home berth was in Porto Montenegro from 2015 until 2018, and we loved the place 8
without discussion the nicest marina we ever visited
from there we cruised the complete Croatian coast up to Venice,
while the bay of Kotor, and the region south of the bay (Budva - Bar) is also very nice,
our long time plan is to go back there,

airports in Tivat (5km), Podgorica (90km), Dubrovnik (45km)

berth prices inflate quite substantially every year,
but local living is very cheap (going out the porto !)
nice add on is the tax free fuel !
2020 berth prices attached
you're aware that their curency is EURO, (while they are NOT in the EU) !
no joking, before that yogoslavia fell appart, MNE had German marks, thats why

there are several posts about Porto Montenegro here on YBW, you might find them,
if not, just asc what you would like to know,

Wow. Those berthing rates are a lot cheaper than what I’m used to in Puerto Portals! Thanks for sending that across. Much appreciated. What are the typical weather conditions for motor boating?

Weather in MNE / Croatia is not as hot as center med / Italy and spain,
but on average very mild,
in Porto M you are in a fjord , = well protected, in summer it can be very hot,
but in winter, the NE wind, coming from 2500m mountains can be freezing cold
in PM they organise group ski trips for boat crew permanently living onboard, ski slopes not far away !

the good thing in the Kotor bay, and everywhere in Croatia, is that there are 1000ths of islands,
In summer, you will alway's find a spot that is protected from the elements,
the Bura (norther wind) can be nasty over there (like mistral in SOF)

What I forgot to say, there are now 3 more new marinas in the bay, so there is competition, 2 of those were supposed to open in 2020, not sure if it happened,
Service cost are really attactive compared to any other place in the med, I had 2 MAN engines rebuild over there. Normal hour rate is 40e/ hr for sevice work.

Super helpful. Thank you very much!

Bart, does Porto M have a pool for berth holders?

What restaurant food and drink prices like?

Pete
Yes there is a big endless pool, with launch terras and bar, only for berth holders and residents of the pm village.

there are several restos, starting from a nice cozy open oven pizzeria / resto, comfort food, Al posto gusto,
Less then 10 euro for a big piza,
then there is a good restaurant called “one” centrally positioned on the central pier, 20 euro for a steak or seabass , ( never ever had bad food in none of these.
then there is a 5 star regent hotel with star q restaurant, that was much more expensive. at the time there were a few specialised resto’s , like suchi bar and libanees resto, but they changed a couple of times, you can find all info ( even menu’s) on PM website.
When you go outside PM village, with the locals prices are really cheep ! Q is less sophisticated, really basic, but sometimes really good.

The Village is purposly build, you might think that it would look all a bit too much of the same, but I can assure you that there no 2 the same buildings or houses, imo very well done with lots of trees and plants all over the place, and many of the streets and walks are natural stone, very classy and very nice.

Hi Scubaboy,

Hope you don’t mind me approaching you this way, but I have seen a couple of your videos of the boat you had in Mallorca. I am looking at buying a share with the same company. I have read both good and bad things. I would really appreciate a couple minutes of your time to get your feedback on the whole experience. (I would have preferred to message privately, but as a newbie here, I am not allowed ?).

If you can spare the time, let me know and I will send you my number.

Many thanks

That’d be great. Much appreciated. Don’t want to put my full number up, but it’s a UK mobile ending 921 388610. Many thanks, Rich
