Does anybody know if there are any bouys in Portland Harbour that could be used overnight by a 38ft sailing yacht with a draft of 6ft 3ins. Landing would also be good as we sail with a dog. We would prefer not to have to go into Weymouth on the way west and again on the way back.

thanks

Pete

The weymouth and portland sailing academy is based in portland harbour, and i think they have some moorings. they have a website, but i can't remember what is the address

Royal Dorset YC 01305 833681 have their moorings on the North (Weymouth) side of Portland harbour at the end of 'Old Castle Road' near Sandsfoot Castle, as do Castle Cove SC 01305 783706. They will probably have some outer deep water mooring not in use. Note that you now have to pay Portland Ports Ltd to enter Portland harbour, which will probably be covered if you make arrangements through one of the clubs. There were also areas that you could anchor, but I'm not sure what the arrangements are now Portland Ports are in control.
You can also anchor on the North side of the entrance to Weymouth harbour. Good holding in sand and OK if there is any West in the wind but not so good if there is any East in it.
If the wind is from the North, or light from any other direction, why not use Lulworth cove, it's not much further than Weymouth to get to 'The Bill'. Look for a sandy patch to hook into in the middle or just South of the yellow range boat buoy, don’t go to the SE side of the cove as there is lots of kelp. Enter the cove just East of centre.

Many thanks, will call them just before we start our holiday.
