Just to re-iterate the various threads re moorings. Staff at portishead really good and knowledgeable. I recommend the marina to anyone I see who comes down to view the marina although always suggest this forum for what could best be described as a balanced view lol. Only had one bad experience when going to my boat, another boater who was washing down his sail boat and had left the hose in the water. When I politely mentioned to him it was in the water (thinking it was an accident) he F'd and blinded at me and told me to mind my own f'in business. Strange response, I use that hose pipe for filling up my domestic water tank as well as for washing down my boat! Have to add all other boaters I've met are really nice and friendly.

I did report him, the only other alternative WAS to find something to clock him with but Steph has already made comments about folks falling in the marina, I didn't have an alibi! Lol. Btw, although I'm a motor boater it was in no way against the sailing fraternity, As mentioned I have met friendly sail boat owners too and I'm sure there are ignorant motor boaters too! I was going to say I had met some really nice sailors but that just sounded soooooo wrong!
Thanks guys.

Staff at Portishead are fab. Apologies you got such a rude response from a raggie. On a similar note there is one fishing boat who steams into the marina at a rate of knots, creating wash and general discomfort to the moored boats. I think this is a reflection of the selfish helm/owner and in no way a reflects other helms/owners of similar vessels.

We moved to Portishead in March of this year and are loving it, I have been down every weekend since moving the boat. My wife has also started to enjoy the boat again. Happy days.

Shame it's just about to change. Most of the car parking has gone (my fault I suppose, I assumed all of the car park belonged to the marina, not just the small one furthest away from the pontoons). I was there at just before seven this morning and there were still 25 cars in the car park and it looked quite full. It's going to be interesting when the berth holders try and park on weekends especially if they operate a pay and display for the residents across the other side of the lock as described to me. Surely berth holders should have some sort of preferential treatment? I hope it doesn't get stupid down there, as stated I did quite like it down there, until I found out what was happening. It could be going the same way as Gloucester docks! I appreciate parking isn't a contractual right but is necessary to enjoy the marina. I hope I've misinterpreted the situation for all of our sakes.

Pay and display is quite common for marinas. Gosport has P&D as has Mylor, I don't mind so long as the charges are reasonable (or I get a season ticket as a berth holder)

Gents - unfortunately (and with due respect) the point has been missed. I'm going to start up another thread. Portishead marina will always welcome visiting boaters and the car parking predicament will have little impact to the enjoyment of the marina.

My point was, we leave our car in Portishead marina car park when we go away on the boat as we allways call in there for a night on the "way home" and having the car there means we can drive home if we want or drive somewhere else for for food.
Our boat "lives" in Bristol City Docks and we have very limited parking there.

Hi Sneds - I didn't realise (or had I forgotten) you were in Bristol marina itself. We've looked there many times and wished we were there but that has its own idiosyncrasies too. :-) I suppose the car parking at Portishead will sort itself out one day and by your comments shouldn't affect you much, its was just a bit of a shock when all this kicked off with no prior notification from the marina. I'm at the marina at all sorts of different days and times so will just have to see how much I'm impacted (I've had my car broken in to a couple of times so paraniod and the old arrangements were fine as the car was always near CCTV cameras so deemed secure). If ever you need any help/transport etc whilst down there, feel free to give me a shout as of course I always have a car down there, just may not be near the marina and parked out on the road somewhere! lol.
All the best

Thanks, I can see parking becoming a problem at Portishead with berth holders having to park on "public" roads.
Maybe the boatyard could be utilised?

On car parking if there is limited space this should be for berth holders only and should not be charged for this and it should be controlled so it only can be used by berth holders.

I agree with MyMobo and will mention it when I'm next in the marina office.

Sneds has a point, but there are various "What about"s. What about crew coming to sail on a resident boat? This is probably a lot more likely than visitor boats bringing a car with them.

For anyone wondering why someone would want to leave as car at Portishead.
We often stay over at Portishead because of the restriced tidal window into or out of Bristol. On those occaisions that we stay at Portishead on the way back to Bristo, we will often leave a car at Portishead so we can go home if we wish.
:-)

Quiet update on the parking. The gravel car park is now completely fenced off (with someones car trapped in it). Went up to get update from marina staff. The marina are not putting up any sort of barrier and will not stop anyone else parking there. They have suggested they may send staff out there on busy weekends but will play it by ear. They have indicated that there are two car parking slots for each boat. Don't know if I agree with that logic but hey ho. A little disappointed. :-(

I don't think we can complain until there is nowhere to park.

Obviously if there are not enough spaces the first move would be to prevent non bertholders and marina staff from parking there.

Freeing up spaces for the bertholders, which is what the car park is for and what we as bertholders pay for.
