Hello everyone, I'm locking out at 13.00 Saturday 18 July bound for Portishead Cruising Club in the River Avon, would anyone care to join me? :-) Tony

Saturday, July 18, 2009 ... From Friday to Sunday

Portishead Cruising Club - Cruiser Rally

This year we are proposing to hold the rally at the clubhouse in Pill. The tide operating at the weekend will be a neap tide allowing visiting boats to stay afloat in the river.

We went to the rally in 2007 at Portishead marina. We had a great time, it was one of the best rallies I have been to. Unfortunatly we will miss this one but would be there if we could.

Have a good weekend, would have loved to come up but will be working not far from you in Portbury Dock. Give me a wave as you go past.

PS I could see the yachts anchored out in the river while driving home across the Avonmouth motorway bridge last night.I didnt realize it was possible so may use that as a bolt hole on neaps in future . Only worry I would have is that other boats transiting the river wont expect you to be there,I would want a big anchor light.

What was the sail back like on Sunday? Any idea what the wind speed was?

I was on the Portishead coast path (Walton tower) while the tide was still flooding at about 4pm and the sea looked pretty wild. I can imagine it was even friskier once the tide had turned. It was a really frustrating day wondering whether to go out or not (I didn't).

The P.C.C. Rally was a great success as per norm, with most visitors electing to berth in the Marina, there was a shuttle service between the marina and the club house, four of us anchored in the river (cheapskates) and contrary to some peoples belief there was plenty of water at low water!!! There was a motor launch on hand to ferry visitors from their craft to shore, the bar-be was mega and there was entertainment, all in all a great event... with regard to the return journey... fresh to say the least, we were down to reef No. 4 and storm jib, the Bones was perfectly balanced under this canvas, we hit a few big waves... well actually holes in the sea, anyone who has made this trip with the wind against tide will know what I mean... don't forget there’s no adventure without venture!!! Last time I did that, I ended up with a permanent brown stripe across the mainsail from waves breaking brown slop onto the boom. I still look at that brown stripe and wonder how I ever managed to put such a deep reef in the mainsail (round boom reefing).

You know, you're not making it any easier. I really wanted to go out so much! Monday will be different!
