Portbail is a great place if you can take the ground - small, old fashioned and v. friendly. No gin palaces, as they wouldn't fit. You have to go alonside an often crowded pontoon in the mud and especially when the fisherman's festival in Mid-August, you may be rafted out 4 or 5 deep. You can get in about an hour and a half either side of high tide, but be very wary at springs, last year we got there too early and anchored off, and then follwed a fishing boat up the river. as we turned to go into the harbour the screeming tide made us do a 180 in the harbour mouth, and our boat is pretty heavy. we nearly collided with the ferry which comes in once or twice a week. There's a good market in the small town, and a few pubs and restuarants - just a good place to chill out, drink wine and sun-bathe.
