Two questions for you, ladies and gentlemen (and others):

1) Do portable VHF radios come with a Europe-wide guarantee? I live in Italy and want to buy in UK (cheaper - no, really, it is!) but want a valid guarantee. Anyone know or prepared to have a look at their own paperwork?

2) Icom M21 (seen in UK) versus M3 (seen in Italy). Pros and cons?

As ever, thanks

Hi,

Any product sold throughout europe should have a Pan European warranty. So for example if the same Icom unit is available in Italy and the UK, you can buy in the UK and expect a warranty to cover Italy. The only thing to watch out for is additional local distribution extended warranties, i.e outside the 12 or 24 months

Whether they will not make things difficult for you, is a different matter.

Poggy.

I'd agree with the previous post re. guarantee, from the legal standpoint.
But I guess that in practice, you'd better be prepared to some sort of difficulties, should you bring to the Italian distributor a radio bought in the UK...
BTW, the Italian distributor is http://www.marcucci.it. It has a quite detailed site, also with english pages.
You can have a look for the different models; as far as I remember, both the M3 and the M21 are available.

Your supplier will tell you,
By the way I have a 4 year old handheld Icom (IC-M3EURO) and its performance has and still is great.
I have recently changed the batteries as two of the four had gone behond holding charge

The M21 and M3 are very Different radio's
The M3 is only splash proof where the M21 and the new M31 are fully waterproof.
The M3 only runs from AA bateries where the 21 and 31 that both Nicad and AA case inc.

Also Icom Uk give 3 year warranty where I think you will fin only 12months in Italy.

Hope that helps

Is there a good reason why you're still using Nicads rather than Li-Ion? I find the memory effect of NiCads a particular pain in hand-held VHFs where you want to make sure they are fully charged before a journey. I leave mine running in a cupboard with the squelch turned down until fully discharged before charging - wouldn't have all this hassle with lithiums.

Tom
