Arising from the bath tap thread (ha ha!), has anyone got one of the heavily advertised steam cleaners, and if so which one please ?

I want to clean some encrusted oil deposits off the engine/gearbox, which cannot be reached by a scrubbing brush.

TIA

Mine is a Morphy Richards and it works very well on oil stains. In fact it works on all sorts of stains and on all sorts of surfaces.

Depending on exactly what it is you are doing,
I would not bother taking the thing out of its box for this.

Pour some boiling water from the kettle (after your brew) and work away with an old (clean) paint brush if you can get in with it.

Wall Paper Stripper With Steam Scoop Removed

I have a low cost B and Q special deal wall paper stripper. It cost about £9.99 many years ago. I take the wallpaper steam scoop off the hose if I need a jet of steam. So far the jet has been used to expand a shaft to knock out a bushing and direct a jet of steam onto the path where I spilt oil. Worked OK.

I considered steam cleaning parts of KS (probably not going to bother now) and it seemed to make more sense to hire one from HSS than to buy. The prices you're bandying around do seem quite cheap, but for a one-off it's possible hiring might still be better. Remember that a hired machine will be a pro one rather than a cheapo DIY job.
