One assumption (which clouded understanding in parts of this thread) was that 'mother earth' - or water - was always a return for any AC live line - even if the other phase wasn't connected to earth by any means whatsoever. There seem to be exceptions.
Now I'm just going out to grab that live wire from the genny to test that assump !#**** sizzle zappppp
