Hi Formites
We are a small Jersey registered motor boat (so not actually part of the EU) and believe I need to clear customs at the first port of entry, to enter Spain.
We spent the last year travelleing down through the French canals and along the French south Med coast.
We have now reached Port Vendres (last port of note on the French side) and tomorrow will be venturing into Spain.
Hoping to head for the first Marina in Spain which is Llanca. Is this a port where I can clear customs? If not which is the closest port with customs facilities.

All advice great fully received.

Schengen to Schengen: do you need to clear customs?

Strictly speaking, yes because the boat is from outside the EU and there are restrictions on the amount of time it can stay in EU waters. In practical terms it may not be an issue in Spain, but it has been an issue in Greece in the past with Jersey registered boats owned by UK residents and VAT paid in the EU being treated as non EU boats.

Hi Tranona. Thank you for that,
This is getting confusing.
Is the UK and Jersey part of the Schengen group?
And if so being a Jersey Citizen do I only have only 90 days in Europe?

No, but the point of the Schengen area is that once people (or goods) are cleared to be in one bit of it, they're cleared to be in any of it, and both France and Spain are members. It's intended to reduce bureaucratic hassle, after all. But of course because of your passport endorsement, this is not so relevant to you as it might be without.

Thank you all for the advise we are now in Spain, went directly to Roses, never even had to visit customs office the Marina staff handed us a customs form to fill in passport numbers and sign, said they pass the details to customs.

So far all hassle free.
