You guys just don't go about things the right way. I regularly use Alladins cave at Deacons, and I send the staff all over the shop getting things for me. I play a bit dumb, (which comes easily to me /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif).
Superstore isn't, for me quite as good. The staff, being younger really don't know so much; but it is the best place for warps and odd bits of rope. Still, they do their best. Had a question for them, and they had to phone me during the week because there was no one in store who could answer my query. But at least they did it.
There is an older guy with full head of grey hair at Alladins Cave Chi, who is a portsmouth Uni lecturer, moonlighting at weekends, and he knows his stuff. Worth looking for.
But by and large we get poor service because the staff are paid very little. Pay peanuts and get monkeys.

I went to the port solent one last year for a set of sail battens and the young lad who served me was very helpful and knew enough to admit what he didn't know. He even chamfered off the ends of the battens after he'd cut them without having to be asked.
And he didn't look down his nose when I told him they were for a 1965 bilge keeler!
I absolutely refute Copterdoctor's world view: "Every couple of years I decide to give up sailing just because I'm sick of all the grief from the industry. Poor service, poor quality and a total lack of customer focus. It runs through the entire industry (including the yachting press)."
In ten years on and around the water I've never had anything but top service, helpfulness and support, from chandlers, yards, suppliers and harbourmasters. Perhaps it's because I sail on the east coast. But I really think you get exactly what you expect to get.
The younger staff at PSMS are just like all other younger staff in the retail trade in the trendier shops, eg music, cosmetics, boutiques and now chandlers. It's the Slocum effect (Mrs not Joshua) and job status amongst their peers. Rob and the rest of the senior staff (all 3 of them) are very helpful. On balance, I find it one of the better chandlers on the south coast and use it regularly.
I have found Marinestore perfectly ok. Prices are good, and delivery is always prompt - normally in 72hrs without paying the extra for faster delivery. If they make mistakes, they will instantly correct them.
(No connection to them, just a very satisfied customer - ordered 3 or 4 times within as many months)
Was (PSMS)in there yesterday, had what i wanted found by staff(rope ladder), trimed it to size on their hot knife for free! very pleased. I think its luck of the draw, but as with most shops, rates of pay are not great so you get what you pay for.
But Marinestore is a "small" co. Tehre can be no more than 15-20 FT equivalent employees, and they still have a good chain of local shops (Maldon, Burnham, Mersea and Walton) where the senior staff are excellent, and there are some youngsters "learning". The combination of local and Internet makes them very good. I also visit Mailspeed (Burnham) on occassion. Nothing like as good because shop retail is less their business imperative.

Mudhook, I sail on the East Coast too and I totally agree.
The service is patchy at best - have had good and bad but usually rude -
Have had to take back several items that were faulty and I was treated with total disdain. Even though I was asking for a replacement.
Don't see why they have to be so obnoxious, ands it's not to do with the amount you spend - went in to buy replacement auto pilot - stated my intention, time was short so I needed it that day amongts ather items - service was terrible, knowledge base zero but I spent £1500 in one go.
On the other hand I was based for a while at Swanick and Nigel at Alladins cave was an ansolute reatail hero - the others were a bit less useful
Mailspeed Marine - gee I hope it's them, they're somewhere close to Poole harbour (for reasons that will become apparent) - gave us excellent service.
When we left Lake Yard to cross the channel I tested our fixed VHF set but for some unknown reason couldn't raise any response to any transmission.
Worried, we abandoned that early morning tide and I rang Mailspeed. They gave me a good price (I checked) on a portable VHF, and brought it down in person to ---- (that expensive marina in Poole) so I could duck in, tie up temporarily, and the Mailspeed chap could hand it over.
It's not the first time we had used them, but it was the most appreciated.
Of course, because we missed our favoured morning tide and took the next (evening) one we crossed in a gale . . but that's another story . .
Ah . . oh dear . . well the place that's in Poole on the road eastwards was very helpful.
Now I remember it, Mailspeed Marine were also pretty good (pricewise etc.) when we bought a bunch of stuff in 2004.
I dunno, maybe I'm just getting myself into trouble here!
