Port Solent Contractor charges

Re: Expert Contractors are at hand to assist your diy

Come on...we need to know where this splendid Volvo dealer is. I assume you are talking about Motortec in Peurto Solenti, but if not and they are being unjustly maligned, speak up sir.

Re: Expert Contractors are at hand to assist your diy

It was not Motortec but perhaps Volvo is rolling this chap out worldwide in an effort to spread confusion and despondency throughout the marine industries. If I posted the name I could bet on a v short shelf life for this post/thread, even though my description of the conversation is as close to verbatim as I could make it. I'll pm you.

Is it normal for marinas to charge contractors who are undertaking work on behalf of a yacht owner ?

From 1st Nov 2006 Port Solent Marina seem to be using this reason to justify charging a licence fee of £ 1500 + VAT per year for contractors not based on-site.

Our contractor, a registered Yanmar dealer on the Hamble, is now passing this pro-rata cost onto our final bill.

Has anyone else had a similar expeince - or is it Port Solent learning a trick or two from our Chancellor of the Exchequer of backdoor stealth making ideas to raise more income ?

I'm not trying to justify their charge, but under Premiers Rules and Regs they state that 'No contractor may work on a vessel for reward without the Company's written permission which will normally be given only to resident contractors and to off site contractors registered with the Company for that purpose.

So, I would assume, that they have just decided to charge offsite contractors for the privilege of working on-site.

And, to be honest, that's exactly what I would do if I was in the marina business. Iwould be charging on-site contractors a rent and charging off-site contractors a registration fee. Wouldn't you?

Actually, I would ask that outside contractors

a) Notify the marina office of their presence so that security is not compromised,

b)Have some sort of specialism related credentials-to maintain standards and safety,

c) Have adequate 3rd party insurance.

But then again I am not a business man /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yup, but not £1500.... thats outrageous, and probably amounts to a months wages for many of them.....

True, but is it a months business for them?

I'm not trying to justify the amount

Volvo guy in a Tie ....

I can believe it as well ......

There are other stories as well about certain facilities in certain marinas ... not only conniving with incresed charges so they can pay marina - but also when they are used after recc'd from Owners Assoc. will apply similar again ...

Best is as another says .... Move boat to more agreeable location and call in YOUR man ...... trouble is - as I see it slowly we are being hemmed in by "cartels" .... so how long before that trick cannot be used ?????
