Hi all

I've been looking into the possibility of keeping our boat on a berth in Port Solent for a season. The mooring fees with Premier are no surprise (around £6,000 a year for an 11 meter berth); however, I have also seen there are often private berths advertised which are significantly cheaper. Some of these private berths have been advertised as low as £250 a month, and there's one that's currently advertised is £265 + electricity.

This is a considerable saving, and also has the flexibility to move if after a few months we don't feel it is working out (not possible with the annual Premier contract). Of course, this has raised a few suspicions that there may be something I have missed! I aware there are no shower blocks, and there's probably a need to notify my insurance, but I can't think what else we would be missing out on.

Has anyone had any experience of renting a private mooring? Is there anything I should be aware of if renting a private mooring? And what benefits do you get that justifies the considerably higher mooring fee from a serviced marina like Premier?

There are a number of sub-let moorings at Port Solent.
The best moorings are those with access to the berth without going through the house owners property, of which there are a few. The limit is strictly 11m - if it says 11m, it means 11m although there are a few that are slightly larger. The East side of M pontoon is predominately 12m - again, there are a number of sub-let berths here but they don't come up very often and are slightly more expensive.

Port Solent now seem to hate us and refuse to give the sub-lessee's any of the benefits that the berth owner would get. I kind-of understand as we don't pay much to P. Solent but then nor would the berth owner if their boat was berthed there!

Thanks Piddy

I'm surprised there isn't more competition for the berths when they become available. Considering the savings that we'll make by renting a private berth (several thousand), I think I can probably sacrifice some of the benefits we'd get from a berth in the commercial marina!

We had a private berth in Port Solent accessed through a gate. It was no problem at all apart from the occasional problem with parking. Although we always found somewhere to park. We did get access to toilets over the other side but not all facilities. It is a big saving over a normal berth with little inconvenience and my be even more secure then on a pontoon on the other side. Can recommend

I am looking for a berth for this summer 2019. I am resident in Australia so I only need a short summer season hence an annual contract with a marina does not work for me. My boat is 11m x 3.9m x 2m
Does anyone know of any private berths available at Port Solent (or any other South Coast ) marina? Location is not too critical.
