Port Police - what are they and which countries have them?

For a second I thought you'd said "If it helps, think of British Transport Police but without the brains". :D
:)

Thing is though, something Ive long considered whilst in the queue or the rubber stampers are being a bit grumpy:

There must be quite a bit of competition in poorer countries to get those uniformed jobs and I reckon the ones who make it are going to do what they need to keep them. Knowing that mistakes will cost them. So I always bear that in mind.

Have met some difficult ones but reckon the nicer ones are the large majority. But you will still never ever win an argument!!

Story in the papers here last year, saying if the traffic cops didn't issue the required number of fines per week, disciplinary action would be taken. Don't know if the same applies to Maritime branch.

The met have a division that does this for the tidal Thames (and nearby inland waterways) Metropolitan Police Marine Policing Unit - Wikipedia . Used to be independent. They 'helped' me wind my narrowboat with their rib once while on a jolly during the notting hill carnival. I assume it's a big policing win like getting the job driving the pursuit dirt bikes.
I believe that they are also the oldest Police force in Britain, predate the Met.

Have you not met what used to be Strathclyde's finest footling around in their rib and mobo? Then there were the two nice young men with guns in Norway that made you visibly paranoid. Never mind the Faslane and Coulport's modplod. Would you like a visit?

The “Port Police” people often refer to in Mediterranean and Caribbean countries seem to be interested in paperwork and forms etc.
The boys in the black RIBs shadowing the subs “doon the watter” don’t look like they have much interest in paperwork? More “tooled up” for rather more macho procedures. And definitely in the category of less than 1% of Scottish harbours.

Yes but they were run by the Port not the Government. Peel and Wellington practiced policing in Dublin first.
