Port Hamble

we spent a couple of months in Port Hamble and quite liked it. The marina is well equipped and reasonably friendly and the village is nice enough with a couple of decent pubs. Do be aware that the current rips through there - getting off and back onto a pontoon can be an entertaining exercise!

Yes, also true at Bucklers Hard as I discovered to my cost last week. Ferry glide skills are vital.

a tiny bit further up the Hamble you will find Mercury Yacht Harbour, still part of the MDL group. I have a long connection with the place,

pros;
its quiet and peaceful and does not have all the charter boats and racers that Port Hamble does.
The river at this point is also quieter so there is less wash from passing boats & parts of the marina are pretty secluded.
There is a free taxi to and from Hamble village on Friday and Saturday night.
Has a chandlery
Newly opened restaurant.
Is going through a bit of a rejuvenation, new pontoons etc.
Great place for Paddle boarding up Badnam creek etc & wildlife extensive
Boat lift etc
Seems cheaper than Port Hamble.... for my 10m boat I paid £800 less than you were quoted..

Con's
Its quite quiet, (if you want a busy place)
Tides on the far off pontoons can mean getting in and out tricky (but just chose one closer to shore)
Its not in Hamble village
Its another 7 minutes travelling to get out the river...
Does have a sea school, best not to moor near them as they can have little whoopsies (although maybe helpful for training/boat handling courses for you?)

It could be worth thinking outside the box - I'm a member of the Royal Southern which has its own yacht haven situated directly downstream of Port Hamble and above Hamble Point. Walk on pontoons although many are long pontoon berths and some (a minority can require some thought about tides).

It is a club, not a marina - many good things about this, but it won't suit everyone. I prefer it. Better location even that PH, great facilities, club atmosphere, good bar/restaurants, events, no school/charter boats!

It is also cheaper than MDL by a considerable margin - even once membership fees are taken into account.

No guarantee of a berth just by being a member, but if you participate in club events, you do have a better chance.
