After genuine love and affection new oil new filters racor filters what happens??

open up thge engines and the port boost dial drops flat followed by the rev counter, aha maybe air in the system so bled it through not a bubble, started her up ran a bit then died again, would tickover but even then eventually die.

So dropped the hook and called sea start, great guy turned up, bled it through - it stopped again! Got it started again ad at 1200 RPM the revs started to die off so he pumped the manual side and the revs came back up!

Diagnosis - fuel lift pump!!

So back to berth on one engine followed by the sea start fella, still didn't hit anything.

Took off the pump, took it apart to find a split washed on the top of the plunger, Search for a new pump begins in ernest tomorow, probably begining at Hendy ford Cosham who advertise Ford Sabre parts.

Welcome to the World of motor boats Ian :)

Glad you quickly got to the bottom of it.

Well I hope it is the lift pump, I think it has to be, most folk say they never fail??

As for the engine stopping with no flappy things and the thought of a tight berth on one engine, it worked...another thing to practice!!

Everything can fail Ian, as i'm sure you know. At least you had the second engine, in lieu of flappy things :)

When you say "split washer", i'm assuming you mean a big rubber washer ? The diaphragm ? Is it not possible to just replace that ?

The old Ford engines are marinised tractor/lorry/industrial engines. It'd be worth finding out which yours is, as parts from the local tractor/lorry dealer or lorry breakers would save a fortune.

Went to Mermaid marine where they new exactly what I wanted by part number and description, at 50 quid each I bought a spare one!!! Even bought the compression rubber washers for the unions.

The pump is a plunger type and inside it is like a piston, the "fibre" washer on the end of the piston had lost a bit which is what made it fail.

New one all fitted ran engine up to temp in gear on the pontoon, no loss of revs so all fixed.

The Peeps at Mermaid are spot on
6 years ago I had a boat with one of their Fords in
It was a 1981 unit
They had all the records/ info and all the parts I ever needed (which weren't many) wish I had one of their's now!

I got 2 spares sitting in the garage, ready and waiting for the other pair to stop, all four over 30 years old.
