Pop up\'s

Been clear of pop up's for about six Months but last few days started to get them from "Ceres". They seem to be advertising everything from the Isle of wight to ink jet printers. could anyone inform me how to get rid?

It's a problem for many people. Download and run this if you have an operating system after Win98. It's an anti spyware from Microsoft, but is based on Giant which they bought last year and is one of best available and is reported to cure Ceres infections.

If you are running an operating system like Windows 95 or 98 post back, and I'll find another solution. If the MS antispyware download is too big, also report back, and I'll find a smaller cure.

The other option is to run
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ online. Not checked yet if this cures Ceres, but it will cure any other unwanteds that have got onto your system at same time

If you are still seeing problems, download 'Hijack this' and record the results. Then post them on the sister forum wwww.webuser.co.uk where someone who can interpret the results will tell you exactly which bits to remove.

Try a search on Google for "ceres pop ups" . you have probably been infected by some sort of Trojan virus/spyware. There are numerous forums on the net for help with this type of problem. I had a similar problem but with a different pop up. Try THIS LINK for info and download of adaware5.se spy removal software.
You may find you have to manually remove files and registry settings though to get rid of it completely.

names to look for are Spybot and AdAware.

changing your browser to Firefox prevents popups and blocks a lot of 'scumware' that is written using ActiveX technology (an attempt by microsoft to make the web proprietory which has been a pain to all of us ever since).

These pop ups seem to have made a concerted attack last week-end. Some how I copped a load of gremlins.

I was advised to run Spybot, which detected a load of spyware, but did not remove it all. The spyware all reloaded when the computer was re-booted.

Thanks to Brendans link to the Microsoft beta version of Antispyware, I have now (cross fingers) got rid of the junk. it took three attemps even then.

I find Spybot works pretty well, but it is worth enabling the "Tea Timer" function .. a rather odd name for the ability of the program to stay resident and monitor traffic in/out of the system (puts and icon in the bottom right of the screen). Having done this, and keeping the database upto date I rarely get hit.

self re-loading spyware, hijackers

some 'scumware' protects itself against being erased. it sits on disk as a concealed program which runs when you start or stop internet explorer. when it runs, it copies itself from disk into RAM and when you shut down IE it writes itself back to disk, replacing the copy Spybot has erased. next time you start up, there it is again. grrr.

the trick is to use spybot or whatever to get rid of the scumware from disk, then hit the reset button which shuts the computer down without allowing any close-down programs to run. next time you start up, windows will moan about not doing a proper shutdown but you can ignore it.
