Pop ups

I appreciate that the owners of the forum want to shove in a few advertisements to pay for it ,plus advertise their own wares. However, I am getting a popup from the bottom of the screen that takes about a third of the screen & has to be deleted every few minutes. I never read these adverts & they are of no interest to me.
What i want to know is- have I picked up an adware virus or are others are experiencing this irritating development that has bypassed my virus checker

There was a thread on this topic the other week, and I was getting pop-ups at the top of the screen at about the same time. So I got "ABP" (Adblock Plus) as suggested in that thread and no pop-ups since... (Is there a smiley for fingers-crossed?)

Perhaps even better solution is to replace the HOSTS file with a custom one, e.g. this one: http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm

If you have not got it already download an ad blocker and a pop upblocker. A Web search will find them.

This is the problem with unintelligent advertising. You actually put your customers off and end up with a technology war between ad blockers and advertisers. Adverts need to designed in such a way as to not annoy customers and a much more subtle approach is needed. If everyone uses ad blockers then the content will dry up as the only thing funding these sites is advertising. The ball is in the YBW court because once you have forced people to start blocking ads you are going to find it very hard to get them to turn their blockers off.

Thanks for the suggestion but I am using XP Pro
That is because I have some expensive programmes like my company accounts, estimating programme, & CAD software that will not update to Win 10.
Not to mention Mapsend with all the maps of european waters - Great for planning improbable cruises at home

Every operating system uses HOSTS file (or I cannot recall one that does not). Go to somewhere like C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc on your computer and you will find yours.

The beauty of using the hosts file is simplicity - no need to install any additional software since you are using built in functionality in the system. Also, add blocking programs can be detected by web sites you are visiting, your modifications in the hosts file are known only to you.
