I need to re-rivet my boom end fittings, and need to get hold of some quarter inch pop rivets (standard size) in the Gosport area. I am sure that there must be somewhere that can supply them but don't know the area.

Any info. gratefully received.

I bought mine from the chandlery in pre=pack off the rotating stands. Most chandlers seem to stock the same items on these things.

I rented the tool from a hire shop, scary to use though, it was the bolt cutter type rather than the consetena <sic> type. When these rivets pop, they really do go with a bang, wear goggles and use gloves. Expect to jump!

I used a concertina type once for the very purpose in question (The maintenance dept where i was working had one that I was able to borrow) but found that when the rivet popped it skidded off damaging the anodising as it went and i tended to go arse over apex after it. I therefore suggest the long two handled version is better.

You should be using monel rivets ???

I had great problems finding 1/4" monel pop rivets locally.

Holts do a pre-pack of three rivets but they are only 1/2" long.
You may find them in one of your local chandlers. I found one pack in Inverness.

I required 3/4" rivets and eventually sourced them from <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.sea-screw.co.uk>http://www.sea-screw.co.uk</A>. They are not inexpensive.

I would sugest you find a spar supplier near you and they will probably be able to sell you some.

I am currently fitting out a mast and boom from bare extrusions and do the following.

Use a large lazy tongs riviter to set them, fit self adhesive foam under all fittings, dip all rivets in Duralac, drive out the centre pin and insert a plastic plug in the hole.

One of the most frustrating problems I have is - When I open up the gun to get a second stroke the centre pin falls out to the inside of the mast. I then have to drill the unset rivet out as I cannot reinsert the pin from the inside of the mast.
If the rivet is driven in horizontally rather than vertically downwards this tends not to happen.

The chandlery opposite Gosport marina sells them individually. Be-warned though, they are 36p each for monel rivets. Bought some there 2 weeks ago.

35 pence each! What size are they?
The 1/4" x 3/4" monel rivets cost me well over £1 each plus VAT plus carriage.

My mistake. Should have said closer to £1.35.

FYI I am actually considering doing a bulk buy of these rivets
Monel 6.4mm (1/4") x 18mm (3/4").
However, to get the price down I have to buy 1500.
If anyone is in the market for these let me know because it may be worth clubbing together.
Alternatively, I could sell individually for 85p each.

To everyone who replied to my post, I owe hearty thanks. I now know where to get the rivets, and just as important are the tips on how to apply them. I'm going to try vertically upside-down, with gloves, goggles, and long lever-type riveter.

Have you tried Anglia Stainless on 01359 251414, based in Suffolk but does mailorder. Prices are good and you wont have to buy 1500...
