poor planning?

It will be interesting to get the full details. A BBC report states " but soon became stranded after his vessel's electronics were cut off by bad weather." Seems he was lost too....

Bavaria 48!!!!
In that case all you need is a bunch of green bananas and a couple of Frey Bentos, at least until the keel falls off :)
But while I'm unlikely to ever do an ocean crossing, I thought the general gist was to add a bit extra in case of, you know, bad weather knocking out your electronics.

I just don't understand how your electronics could be that important. It is an ocean and a sailing vessel. Compass, sun etc. One direction there is land, the other sea. You don't need to be accurate to hit a continent.

Yeah of course take extra. Four weeker? Take extra week normal plus some emergency fray bentos pies.

The knocking out electronics that according to some never happens is why astro is a good back up. Even without that, sailing west will get you somewhere. There's loadsa islands in the Pacific. Best not bump into them though!

Seems to be more to the original story than has come out so far. Certainly lots of questions. I can't understand why he couldn't keep sailing, even with some sort of jury rig, given the mast was still up. Even with no electronics, sail towards the sunset until you hit something, preferably in daylight. There may be a reason, but the coverage is of a miraculous survival rather than what actually happened.

Remember those two women who drifted round the Pacific a few years ago then suddenly turned up and claimed to have been lost for months? Never did hear the upshot of that.

Looks like a warram double hulled craft…….all a bit odd as he has a mast, what really happened?
I wonder if the poor chap had some kind of mental breakdown, perhaps exacerbated by lack of nourishing food (he had had bowel cancer some while ago and had adopted a strange diet) , and just couldn't face the effort required to do anything to help himself.

Yes something happened out there…
