Poor old Watchet again

I have just been told by a marina berth holder that Watchet has a water problem ( I don't know the full facts or if there is any truth in what he said ) but he pulled out from the marina and is now moored in Minehead ( shows how bad he considers it is ) but his outboard is being eaten alive in the marina and he has had to send his huge outboard back to the factory for repair to all the stuff below the waterline and the engine is only a few years old ,the factory was shocked at its condition " never seen nothing like it on such a young engine"

Did you notice anything odd whilst at Watchet? Was the water temp higher?
Glowing phosphorescence visible at night?

Could the deterioration of metals be connected to any leakage from "Hinkley"

That will be the boat no doubt that had a real go at the marina for this a while ago, and then it turned out that he had magnesium anodes on the excessively big engine in salt water. All this on an engine mounted on a transom with no reinforcement.

You may well be right there, looking at the set up and the BS that comes out sometimes You and me both know who we are referring too

Plenty of boats lifted in and out with no other concerns. IIRC there has been nothing but problems with that boat since day 1.

Owner missed the tidal gate (which is automatic and controlled by depth of water in outer harbour - which is why the marina only issue/publish predicted times - and had to sit on mud outside. Transom showed signs of cracks. Owner blamed marina for 'shuting gate early'. Boat taken away for repair and it came to light that a local boat 'repair' man had modified boat to take massive engine (225hp?) but had added no reinforcement - to a boat designed for engines much smaller. IIRC the owner did appologise to the manager though, but I know the marina staff were cheesed off, especially as the owner went round telling everyone.

i do no big engines with out drives ( mercathods ) to stop alu roting a way on big engies , but has eney one put one of thes on a outbord engine , soon i mabey fiting one on my yacht engine as a good test ?

Most outboards have a sacrificial anode fitted as standard. They are sometimes bolted to the anticavitation plate above the prop. Usually zinc for salt water.

The last I heard, can't remember where from, was that the Environment Agency were preventing the marina operators from dumping the silt back into the Channel!!!

Surely this cannot be true - can it?

I'd like to know too, as I'd like to take the boat over from Cardiff sometime in August. We are shallow draft but have a wing keel that I don't want sucking down into mud.

this suggests that they're making a start on it at least?

well we visited watchet a couple of weeks ago, it was the dredger's 1st test on our 1st day-
it looks very impressive and effective! it seems to be doing the job we had'nt been for 5 years so i was amazed to see it at low water! having said that we were on the end of A pontoon and only the bow dried, it is really soft mud and all the boats that dried were ok, i'm glad their getting it sorted as it's a beatiful friendly place! don't let the mud put you off..
