Poole Town Quay? - There is an alternative!

Last week we managed to get away for a few days to avoid the Bank Holiday rush.

Not having visited Poole for over a year, we arrived at Poole Harbour entrance on Thursday after an exhiliarating 4 hour beat from Yarmouth.

Not wishing to pay the £23 at Poole Quay we dropped anchor at our usual anchorage in the shadow of Brownsea Island and enjoyed a wonderful sunset and the most peaceful evening for ages.

Yes, we had to share the pleasure - with two other craft some distance away and the local wild life which stirred into action at 0430 hours. All this for no charge.

We were further rewarded with a fine broad reach back to the Solent the following morning.

Nice. I motor-sailed half a mile from my mooring - engine conked out, had to sail onto a pontoon then get a tow home. Then spent the rest of Sunday taking apart the engine trying to sort it.

I prefer the kind of sailing w/e you've just described...

Thats the beauty of poole, you can always find a quiet out of the way place to get away from the crowds. I tend to hide away round at arne and the "bottom" of south deep where there are some really remote spots.

Yes, lots of palces to borrow a mooring or drop an anchor. I think people keep it to themselves so there is a space for them!
Studland bay and a trip up to the pub makes for a good night out when the wind is from the West.

Dolphin Marina (Poole) as its called, also manage the wall moorings. They now seem to include 'harbour dues' for visiting boats, can't remember that before.
