Poole streams

I seem to remember a pilot book somewhere saying that Poole tides are "Almost unpredictable at neaps". I normally assume that it goes out for 2 hours before low, it comes in for 2 hours after low and then it just sloshes about for 8 hours. Never been far out.

I don't know if there is a detailed tidal atlas for the harbour- I've not seen one. For the direction of currents in the entrance the Poole Entrance tidal curve is a pretty good indicator. There is generally a 45 min time lag between the time of HW at the entrance and the quay at Wareham, other parts of the harbour can be interpolated.

Round the back of the islands the direction of the tidal flow generally follows the channels. Tidal flow in the main (Middle) channel is fairly straightforward, linked to the tide table curve, but the Wych Channel can turn at different times, which have become more difficult to predict since the Middle Channel was deepened to take bigger cruise ships and ferries. In the North Channel a large eddy current builds up on a strong incoming tide.

Although there is a relatively small tidal range, the tidal height is above the mean for 16 of the 24hours.
