I'm thinking of taking a mooring in holes bay at Poole, My boat is a small cruiser with a draft of about a meter. It’s my first time on the coast as I normally sail her inland, so any advice would be a great help,

thanks....

Access to Holes Bay is restricted by bridge swings, approximately once every 2 hours. Can be quite exciting on busy summer weekends when large numbers of boats, both sides of the Bridge, are milling about waiting for the swing especially with a strong tide running and some wind.
From the Bridge there is about another 45 minutes motoring to the end of the Poole Fairway and the open sea. Although with your draft sailing within Poole Harbour is an option.

P.S.

Forgot to mention that Poole BC are going to add a second swing bridge within sight of the first in the next couple of years just to add to the fun.

aside from the potentially negative aspect of bridges...........
1.throughout the summer there are firework displays from both Poole sandbanks and Bournmouth Pier, Friday/Saturday
2. The Banks Arms above Studland Bay does fantastic food in the massive garden, serves excellent real ales and is good value. Overnighting in Studland is easy and well protected from anything outwith S - ENE.
3. Swanage is a little further, has more pubs and restraunts, but is equally sheltered outwith WSW - ESE.
4 You could go to the Solent for the weekend, Yarmouth out of season is fab, but West is best - Lulworth/Weymouth.
5. You can always stay in Poole Harbour! - many people have never explored the Westerly areas and anchorages in the harbour - more fool them.
Finally Brownsea Island has a summer open air theatre which is a great trip for people with their own boats if you can get tickets - 2004 now I am afraid although odd tickets may be available. Glynbourne by sea...../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

As you can see I think Poole is the best base in the UK whatever your craft -

Also cosider Wareham at the back end of Poole Harbour. Well sheltered when it's too blowy as sea.
