I'm heading to Poole with a mate this weekend, and I reckon it's at least 5 years since I've been in. I'm looking for a marina or mooring that's preferably not eye-wateringly expensive, is walk ashore, and not a million miles from the pubs etc. 32' yacht drawing 1.8m.

Where's good these days...I suppose I'd better phone up and book!

Thanks in advance

The 32ft Beneteau moored next to us today paid £47 in Poole Town Quay a couple of nights ago. We have also been shocked at some of the price rises this year, but full marinas shows folk are willing to pay £35 a night in Brixham on the events pontoon and £37.50 in Noss on the Dart. Totnes at £15 and £20 for Lyme Regis is more our price range.

Weather is dreadful for Sunday at the moment, we will be safely tucked up somewhere by then.

Poole main marina at town quay by the delights of local racing cars etc is highly over priced for the facilities provided which are tired and need updating sadly like the rest of the town. When compared with Weymouth or Lymington the marina is needing improvement so you might find better facilities at other Poole marinas so would be interested to hear reports on other Poole choices in terms of prices etc.

we radioed poole yacht club when in the area this summer and their berth for our 35 feet was quoted at £40+ - we decided to give it a miss and anchored elsewhere in the harbour - we miss the old town quay arrangements which were fun (once safely moored)- convenient and not expensive - we have visited the "new" poole haven marina on the quay once and were unhappy at the cost and have not revisited since - we did challenge Poole Harbour staff at their stand at the boat show one year as our experience was that their charges substantially exceeded the charges we had paid for visitors at other ports such as weymouth/lymington/yarmouth and southampton - their response was that checked their marina charges against other solent marinas and were competitive - when we challenged them further they accepted that their comparison of charges did not include Poole harbour dues which they added to the marina charge and they argued that harbour dues were entirely different to the marina charge and that they were not relevant in comparing costs - not an argument that we felt was valid as we pointed out the total cost of marina/dues/power etc is what we compared as that is what we were required to pay.

(we also pointed out that as the haven marina is owned and operated by Poole HC who are also the body who set and charge /collect the harbour dues that their attempt to ignore the harbour dues when doing comparisons with charges at other nearby ports was in our view questionable)

Poole Yacht Club is the best (would say that!). quieter than the quay, excellent facilities and club house plus 15 minutes walk over the bridge to the fleshpots. Big advantage is that you can enjoy the Quay but leave it behind when you get back to the boat.

Since the very handy fuel barge ( which also supplied everything from newspapers to milk, beans and beer ) has been muscled out, where is the easiest one can go for petrol / diesel if not at a marina, just anchoring ?

It was not "muscled out" The owner gave up because he could not make it pay.

Fuel is available at the Coralls fuel dock just before the town bridge on the port side (next to Sunseeker) or at Cobbs Quay.

When we visit Poole and start to run out of supplies or are desperately in need of a shower we sometimes do a short stay at the Quay boat haven. This year, I think, it cost us £6.50 (28ft boat) for 4 hours. Plenty of time to shop, have a look round and a shower.
Poole is gorgeous until you need to re-stock.
Another option is to go up to Ridge Wharf on the Frome (£23 for the night) then the dinghy up to Wareham for shopping.
It looks like Redclyffe yacht club may well have visitors berths (up to £20).

Never let the truth get in the way of a good SJ rant!

Giblets, chum,

are you familiar with all the background of the ' fuel barge ' ?

alahol2,

thanks, good info; but I'd be very surprised if Redlyffe YC has spaces available, they normally fill all the berths whenever there's a summer gale, so seeing as it's a bank holiday with the schools out and grot forecast it might be worth checking first...01929 551227

Though if you're staying aboard there should be moorings in the river available to grab - I'd think one's chances at the town quay would be rather slim.
