Don't know how many of you have also suffered this issue but I have a total solution :encouragement:

Hot weather evaporates the water in the head .
Stink then comes out the pipe.

Solution is to put a ball in the head, ball seals the head and stops the evaporation and pong.

If you forget to remove the ball before use it doesn't matter as the ball floats to the top and head still works.

Nice to smell you back ! Thought you were MIA

good suggestion btw 

I also thoroughly rinse with fresh water...the bowl that is...

Nice to see you back!
What sort of ball? fluffy tennis ball? Cricket? Beach? :D
I'm still cogitating on the hygiene implications of fishing the balls out:D

Presume process goes something like this ;

1) Only use ball when leaving the boat for longer periods .. (no point when you are living onboard and use the facilities)
2) Use one of those light "stress balls" as it will float high in the water in case you forget...
3) Removal of ball is done when arriving at boat with same principle that dog owners use when cleaning up after their dogs and stored in a zip-lock bag.
4) Green or blue frog-tape over lid (with zip-lock bag) when ball is in place to remind that removal is required prior to use.

Do you need a hazard warning sign ? :)

I have one of these fitted http://www.force4.co.uk/lalizas-toilet-sanitizer-unit.html#.VUMueSFVhBc

Handily allows me to avoid having a smelly tennis ball on board.

Nothing worse than turning up at the boat, pumping the heads and filling the boat with the smell of rotten eggs. I fitted a similar bowl in the inlet pipework which I drop an aquaclean tablet into after shutting the seacock when leaving the boat, since doing that we haven't had any smells at all.

I also fill the holding tank with clean water through the deck fitting and drop in a tub of Puriclean and leave for a week once or twice a year which seems to help keep the outlet pipework and tank clean.

Welcome back Pete. A quick question,, what do you do if you suddenly find yourself caught short and need a No 2, do you take the time to fish the ball out or just @@@@ all over it?

I really think I can do without your furry ball:o

I'll leave the technicle testing to find out the preferred balls to you ;)
I thought your suction thingie wouldnt suffer with the same problem but understand your concern, I certainly wouldn't want my fury balls stuck in it either :o

For what's its worth my ball is a giant power ball, heavy and hard.

I only install it when we leave the boat for a week or more.
Top 8/10 is dry and clean, it's only the bottom that comes in contact with the mucky water.
Taking it out with two fingers isn't an issue.

well done Alf, that's the ideal although
I wouldn't use a soft ball in case the hot/cold suction effect pulled it into the pipe too far.
