I've just discovered that an eyebolt on my pontoon has pulled out. It's left a hole that is too big to deal with by fitting a bigger eyebolt/washer so I need something more done. A plate welded over on to take a new eyebolt or something like that perhaps.

Anyone know a reliable welder/fitter on the Hamble?

You could try Mike Lindsell at the Warsah Hamble Ferry co. 02380 454512 or 07720 438402
he maintains my mooring and has welding gear also; reliable and reasonable pricing. Does my annual mooring inspection using a diver if you need yours checking anytime.

Don't forget to ask the welder what he can offer as rust-proofing of the repair! Welding cannot be done on galvanised steel, so the zinc will have to be removed first and the weld's heat affected zone itself is even more prone to rusting than the original mild steel.

You don't say how big the damaged area is, but I'd be inclined to get it abraded back to clean metal and then superglue or bolt a galvanised patch each side then spray over with Zinguard for added protection. When the eyebolt is tightened it will hold the patches in place and they will distribute the load into the structure.

Rob. (thinking of repairs to his own pontoon!)
