POMAHMUKA

I was given an aluminium rowing boat this week. The manufacturer's plate seems to be in Russian and the name on the side is "POMAHMUKA". Has anyone heard of this make? It is quite a nice looking boat, about 8 feet long, beamy and shallow draft.

It might do, if I could workout how to use Babel fish I would try it. I also had an e-mail from Holland telling me it meant "Romance" in Russian. Could there be a connection between stew in the sense of hot, wet and comforting, and romance, do you think?

Pomahmuka was an Indian princess, the daughter of Powhatan, the powerful chief of the Algonquian Indians in the Tidewater region of Virginia. She was born around 1595 to one of Powhatan's many wives. Or was that Pocahontas?

What a great conversation!
I am very proud that our Russian word resembles the name of a Mexican princess so much!
No doubt, the mysterious "POMAHMUKA" is "ROMANTIKA" spelled in Cyrillic. The small russian T resembles when hand-written the english M, and small russian I is just like U in handwriting. Thus the word really means "Romance" and has regretfully nothing to do with the other ideas proposed...
There are many words spelled in Cyrillic in such way that they can be read in english, too: "BOPOHA" (boat's name, eh?) is pronounced as "VORONA" and means a crow.
A russian stewing pot... "ZHAROVNIA"!!!!
