Which is both the cause and the excuse. I used to live amongst the hill farmers of the pennines and they were environmental vandals almost to a man. One of them had a deal with the local paper mill to get rid of their waste from toilet paper production so you regularly saw his fields turning a nice shade of pink or blue. But mostly they just dump old machinery and waste on their land and never clean it up.i imagine very few of us have the luxury of a job/business that causes no environmental damage, directly or otherwise.
But how about heavy industry? I worked in a steel mill which for years had simplt poured cheap hydralic oil into its mill stands rather than cure the leaks so when we removed parts of the mill and dug down for new foundations we didnt get water coming up but oil. And in the hundreds of gallons.
Then of course there are the office based desk drivers, who these days dont live walking distance from the office but commute huge distances polluting the air with the energy they use to do so, not to mention the wrappers from Pret or McD.
