I just received our renewal notice for ISC membership.

First they get our names wrong, then they point out that my subscription hasn't been received and finally they tell us that if it isn't received by 1st March they will exhibit our names in the club-house for one month!

No previous letter or reminder, and they look forward to hearing from me shortly.

How should I respond?

You could write and explain that a sailing club is a band of like minded people with a common interest who gather together for social reasons. That the commitee and staff are there to serve the members interests. That sailing is a refined pastime undertaken by gods chosen people. How in well run sailing clubs the horney handed son of toil sup's on equal terms with the great and the good in a fellowship of shared endevour. They won't recognize that place I'll bet.

Explain that people who demand money, before it's due date, in a threatening and hectoring way are below the salt.

Ask further if they understand the laws of defamation and lible or whether they'd like a smack in the gob.

Or just bloody well resign.

I'll admit I'm not the bloke to ask being much less clubable than a seal pup but I've rarely seen any club I'd want to join.

The more brass necked of us, should we ever be guilty of p*ss poor passage planning and mistakenly end up in Cowes over night, just waltz into the ISC, sign ourselves in, and avail ourselves of the facilities. Ask Chris Robb for details.

Very well put. But I'm afraid I'd not have the patience, such a down right ill mannered request, nay, demand (with menaces to boot) deserves nothing better than the removal of every comittee member that put his name to it, personal preference would also involve shoving a photostat copy of the offending letter up each of their arrogant arses. It's B@st@rds like these that give clubs a bad name.
All IMHO of course.

Thats what I've always done at ISC up until last year, when I felt that I should make an effort to join at least one club. Almost all YCs welcome visiting yachtsmen with open arms, but I felt it was the 'done' thing to at least be a member of one club. Membership for SWMBO and self is £174 a year so it's not peanuts and I would expect to at least be treated with courtesy if they want me to renew.

Perhaps I've upset somebody!

looked at another way....

(1) could your handwriting have been a little clearer on the appication so that there records were accurate
(2) you haven't paid, and the 1st of March is looming so it's nice of them to remind you because...
(3) as someone coughing up 174 you would like to see a list of those members who haven't had the decency to remeber their subs were due and paid up promptly - thus saving the club (and it's members) the associated administration fees of chasing etc.

I rather agree with you Duncan - surely you know when your subs are due - it costs money to send out reminders. I don't know about this club but most are run by volunteers - it's just an extra burden on some poor sod to have to send letters out; we have the same problem and increase fees if they aren't paid by a certain date.

I think that the ISC Annual Membership fee is asked for on the 1st of January for some reason. Anyway I'm going there for dinner this evening so I will ask and also point out that perhaps they should glance at this forum as they have upset a member.

Frankly a cruising yatchsman doesn't need a club. I was a member of Hayling Island for 40 years - I got a letter like that - coupled with a complete failure on their part to maintain the moorings and refusal to let us see the records - Needless to say _ I resigned - and heve never missed it.

If the boats not sold - I have oprganised a mooring in Poole for 2004 - so I am hoping no one makes an offer!
