Hi Folks,
I was just wondering if anybody has any thoughts on deck and upper hull polish. My boat is old but still with the original gel coat. I intend to T/cut her and was wondering if good quality car polish would suffice or would I be better with a marine type, I don't go to sea. Thanks for your help. This is a regular topic. T cut will not do much, you wll need a medium grade compound for any more than very light repolishing. Car polishes often contain silicones so are frowned upon as they may make repairs difficult.

Suitable rubbing compounds are marketed by the like of Farecla and 3M. They should be used with a moistened (wet!) closed cell foam compounding mop. 3m do, or at least did, a kit but IMHO it was expensive. You can finish of with a suitable wax polish if you want.

Screwfix sell the mops and some of the Farecla compounds.

Because it is a regular topic a search of this forum for Farecla will find you loads to read but because the forums' own search engine is not very good you may find it better to search Google for YBW + Farecla

Hi,
As above Farecla and 3M also Meguiars - they do specialist car and marine polishes, waxes etc.

- and they do not contain silicones, they are "water based".

Be happy to advise you, not a sales pitch !

Hi Adrian, Thanks for offer, my problem is a 30 year old cruiser. She is currently in the water but I would like to brighten up the outer cabin surface and deck to see me through to the end of the season. I have everything from oxidisation through to varnish stains to contend with. Over the winter I will probably have to sand down and fully re polish her but I really don't want to have to resort to paint at least not all over. Any advice would be most appreciated. Thanks Alan. PS would the C&s Oxidation kit be the way to go and if so could you let me know postage costs to n. Ireland /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
