Polish

There are no doubt different opnions on polishing GRP boats. In a recent posting some useful comments were made.

I have not used polish on GRP that contains silicone, on the grounds that I gather that subsequent paint will not adhere to the polished surface. Am I correct, or just being paranoid? Are there other potential problems?

A problem here that is that it is virtually impossible to find a polish that does not contain silicone.

Recently, I have heard of polish that contains Teflon. Is this better? Are there potential problems with Teflon?

After polishing the boat, should it be waxed?

Presumably one should not polish or wax non-slip/skid surfaces.

Are automotive products satisfactory?

Couple of the automotive polishes don't contain silicon, Autoglym being one and Decasil classic being the other. Starbright do a teflon polish that gives good and longlasting results.

The silicon in a lot of polishes soaks into the gel coat and does funny things apparently. I use a G3 compound for giving the boat a shine and removing small imperfections and follow with a teflon polish that keeps it looking good for the season.

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!

G'day Dr Smyth,

Silicon contamination will reject new paint, it can be removed with some solvents but it takes a lot of getting rid of; most painters apply a mist coat to ensure its all gone before applying primers.

It's good practice to polish and wax every year, you may need to apply more wax between polishes.

You can apply polish to non slip areas to help keep it clean, the raised (non slip) areas soon loose their gloss.

Good to see another contributor from Oz, I'm up on the central coat, southern end of the Whitsunday's.
