Dreaming up some ideas for the motorboaters at MYC for the regatta in August.

Poker Run springs to mind. Don't hear of many in the UK. Anyone done one? What are thr rules? How do you set it up?

I know it involves playing cards and destinations but that's about all!

Advice greatly appreciated.

My understanding is that a poker run is not a race (important for insurance). Entrants proceed to five stations at each of which they collect a playing card in a sealed envelope. The winner is the one with the best hand.

So not a race at all. It doesn't matter how quickly you get to each station because being there first doesn't guarantee you a better card. Mind you if you want to get there quickly there's nothing to stop you turning up the wick /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We held one last weekend in Bergen, with Fountains, Bladerunners, Nortechs and other assorted fast boats, as Dave said, you go round and collect envelopes, so its not neccessarily the fastest boat that wins, although our 115 kts Nortech did, I was glad seeing as I had prepped it for the run and two of the other Nortechs retired with mechanical problems.

At each of the locations one orgainsery person has to be there with a pack of cards for each arriving boat to pick a card, qand of course they don't get to see the card they pick.

Each crew has to be given 5 cards, either by having five locaions or of course some locations give out more than one card. Then at the end, the best hand wins.

It is not a bad idea for each organisery person to note down the card each boat has chosen! Then orgainsers can verify the winner. Otherwise in the confusion of lots of boats and crews etc, some boats can keep picking extra cards and sending different crew for extra cards in a tender (say) to get a better hand. Of course, i would never do such a thing.
