Any ideas on what the points setting needs to be for a 28AE outboard? I cant find a manual.. I was thinking about 0.3 to 0.4 mm
Don't get me started on that... Such a frustration, it seems as though I have the only 28AE in the whole *insert synonym for coitus* world...Difficult to find anything about Yamahas pre 1984. I doubt if you will find many parts either.
They're set to 0.4mm at the moment, that's about 16thou. I found somewhere on a forum that for a 25A, which is basicly the same engine, the setting is 0.3mm to 0.4mm.

Very few parts, even at the Yamaha dealers. Zero service information, not at the Yamaha dealers, not on the internet (downloadable or hardcopy's to buy). Where as all this information gone? It has to be somewhere, somewhere there have to be manuals for these things.
But yeah, the engine cost me 100€. I bought a carb repair set for a newer engine which used a lot of similar parts and managed to sneak a few things out of this set, total cost for the engine is about 160€ now. Runs great, so absolute bargain. Only reason I decided to get involved with this quest for parts and information.
If it runs great stick with the 0.4mm unless you discover any info that says otherwise !
( BTW I has hauled over the coals by the mods for using asterisks to hide an unacceptable word, in my case referring to a black skinned gentleman hiding in a wood pile! It is against the rules! )
