I'm sorry you feel that way? I thinks that if you really want to do it right you will and if you have some support e.g. friends or a sailing club to lean on you will get there. By the way, we don't stop learning. nearly every time out we learn something new or become more competant by experience.
As an academic you may be to concerned about the detail and theory instead of enjoying yourself while you learn the principles. this means playing around in safe waters and experimenting.
I had to learn on the River Mersey as a child and that mean't I dare not capsize because of the pollution!
