Plywood Tender \'Old PBO Article\'

Hi, a short while ago I was reading an old copy of PBO at the Marina which contained an article on building a small 8' plywood tender. Since reading it I have decided to have a go at making one of these for the Grandchildren and perhaps modifying it to include a keelboard rudder and sail.
Only trouble is the Magazine is no longer there!!!

As I recall it was an older mid 90's magazine and the article was 4 or 5 pages long approximately in the middle of the mag, the couple and there two children were involved in the assembly and painting etc and the article included scaled templates for the bulkeads and skins to cut from 8'x4' plywood sheets.

Don't suppose any of you helpful forumites can either remember this article or have some old copies you could look through for me, I am sure my grandchildren would appreciate it. (Grovel, Grovel)

I have done a search on the Magazine reprints and sent for two that looked likely candidates but with no luck, but if anyone can supply a date and perhaps author I could try again to get a copy.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Regards
Tony.

Not to sure of the article you are referring to but, in December 2003 PBO there is a project to build a timber Sandpiper looks quite neat but it is nearly 14' perhaps a bit to big?

However if you want to go with a small sailing dinghy have a look at :
http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/pages/sailing_dinghies.php
There is a Fireball for £250 in need of some work ... but a nice starter boat for the kids.
There are plenty of dinghy’s for fun sailing at all sorts of prices.

Just a thought I would assume the designer for the PBO dinghy will have designs for smaller boats?
The tele no etc is as follows:
Conrad Natzio
tele: 01508 548675

I am also sure there is a boat building school down at Lyme Regis a web search should get some results.

Finally try a PM to 'Clyst' a forumite who used to build wooden boats he may be able to help.

Good luck - enjoy

their was a small tender designed by jack holt called "jack sprat" i recall
this was stich & glue similar to the mirror.
i cheated & made templates from one on our moorings out of "wallpaper" some 25 yrs ago.

doesn't PBO regularly advertise plans for their 'pup' (could be wrong name) but sounds exactly like what you are looking to build?

or not!

I wouldn't be inclined to recommend a Fireball as a starter boat for adults, let alone the kids!

Why not a Fireball?
There is a big difference between setting it up for racing & setting it up for playing.

I would prefer a Fireball to a mirror or a laser, but thats just IMO
probably one of the best platforms to start would be a cat, say a Hobie 14, good fun & stable but expensive.

Its all really a bit academic anyway - how old are the grandchildren?

Yes plans for the PBO pup are advertised regularly and I would imagine that it would an excellent choice for a child's dinghy.

>Why not a Fireball?

Setting it up for kids would really call for smaller sails. The standard Fireball sails don't come with reef points. If you do put in reef points? The boat can be a pig to right from a capsize, esp. if it goes turtle. Even on its side, the centreboard floats quite high out of the water. When you do manage to right it, the cockpit is full of water and isn't self-draining.

Of course any boat can be tuned-down to make it more docile: but I'd still think that a Fireball would be OTT for beginners. I'd agree that a full rig Laser isn't a beginners' boat: but with the small 4.7 rig it becomes completely manageable and easy to learn on!

A cat would be a great way to learn sailing: Glenans France use Hobies for their beginners courses increasingly. It's a nice change from the position in the UK / Ireland where cats are still something exotic.

Re: Plywood Tender \'Old PBO Article\'

Thanks for the response, the 14' is a bit long as we would like to be able to lift it on the davits, assuming mast , keelboard and rudder are made demountable.

Boats&Outboards do have lots of tenders etc but now with time available I really fancied building from scratch.

Grandchildren are 18months and 6.5Yrs, so its really to start the eldest and to be there when the younger one gets a little bigger.

Thanks again.

Tony.

Re: Plywood Tender \'Old PBO Article\'

Hadn't thought of making templates from an existing one, good idea I will keep my eye out for a suitable model and this may then answer my question.

Thanks for the info, I will see if I can get some details on the PUP, maybe they will have something I can pick up at the Boat show either for the PUP or something similar.

Thanks for the info, I had already found the plans for the D4, which was a possibilty, however I rather fancied the seating arrangements and full height bulkheads I remember in the PBO Pram dinghy article I saw.

Tony.

Tony,

I have most PBO's through the 90's. If I get chance over the next few days I will have a look and see if I can find the tender you refer to. If you can get the number for me even better.

Happy new year!

Peter.

Re: Plywood Tender \'Old PBO Article\'

Tony,
I have an original article from November 1987 which describes "Boat Owners Budget Dinghy" which is made from 3 x 8'x4' sheets of ply. It had a central lengthwise seat in which you could also stow oars. If you PM me with your address I'll put a copy in the post for you.
