Plymouth Winter Storage

Hi everyone,

I plan to berth a 26ft/27ft sailboat in Sutton Harbour marina, for the summer (i.e April-October) and will be spending a fair amount of time on board, but not over the winter period. Initially I thought I would keep the boat in a yard over winter, or possibly on a mooring, but now that I have done some rough calculations, it seems it's not really much more just to stay in Sutton year round. I found this quite surprising- an annual sutton berth was cheaper than expected and dry storage was more than expected. Seems obvious to me to keep it in Sutton, for financial reasons as well as the fact I could still use it over the winter on the nicer days. Although I suppose having the boat out of the water over winter gives plenty of opportunity for maintenance.

Am I being naive? Also, any recommendations for the cheapest winter storage option?

Right up the end of the Lynher river

Stonehouse Creek

These are ones I can think of which are perhaps a little cheaper than the obvious marinas

You could join a club like Cargreen and stay on a mooring all year , it's pretty sheltered.

There is a direct trade off in most places with repect to access vs prices.
If you want pontoon access 24/7 , all tide access and easy near winter storage you will pay for it.

I for the last 7 year have been at Mayflower.
I then started using Mayflower for 6m in the summer and Claods for winter storage/hard standing to reduce costs.

This year as a bit of an experiment I will be at Cargreen for the summer and then Cloads over winter

Have not checked but Boating World at the top the Lynher is probably cheaper cos it needs a good string tide to get to it and drivingwise it's down Cornish country lanes

Noticing you maybe new to the world of boat ownership , forgive me if you are not.
It's wise to note that you will spend many times what you paid for the boat over the years , on moorings and storage.
It's one of the largest costs of boating , do not underestimate it.
