With an anxious eye on the forecasts, last week, it seemed that it would not be too stupid to go given north / north east / north west with no gales forcast. The gods smiled on us, the seas in the Looe steep and confused, crew tired from a short week still with five day's work to do, caution saw us in Yarmouth harbour on Friday night. Possibly we were the only visiting yacht, but the harbour taxi was running and there was a warm welcome in the hostelry. I note with a smile the gas heating mentioned in a previous post - no such luxury for us! Just lots and lots of layers, Michelin Man cometh.
Saturday 10.00 we escaped the Needles channel, early perhaps, but worth it because we were carrried by the tide passed St Albans and Portland at 10 knots average over the ground, not bad with a waterline length of 24' Sunshine, all plain sail set, reaching in perfect conditions with a slight sea sometimes surfing under us. Darkness fell in Lyme bay, winds backed and we were down to no.2 and 2 reefs, close reaching, on a foul tide and still bettering 5 knots. I do recommend Ballads! Orion, behind, had his details filled in, pecs made of minor stars never seen in our humanland of light. Glorious night! Yay for hot dinners!
Round start point, with the Northwest wind forcast failing to materialise, we still needed not the donker, though slowed a bit , shaking out reefs and changing up to the no. 1. Shootin stars, too cold for phosphorescence.
Plymouth sound by 0200. What.
I should point out here we have between the three of us some 125 years of sailing experience. No lifeboat call outs that I am aware of in that time.
Discretion is the better part of valour, but with care, still go for it!
