Out of all the Plonkers on the water I would like to nominate this boat for 'plonker of the week'

I believe this is a Baveria 37 foot Yacht.
I didnt notice a name as it was sporting the ever popular 'www....co.uk' instead.

What has he done to deserve nomination ?

Sailed through a crowded anchorage

Just as he was tacking into a direct and certain collision course with me he ran aground on a falling tide.

All this while advertising the RYA sailing school on the hull

Anyone wanting to learn how to sail through an anchorage, run aground and wait over 2 hours to refloat can apply here :D

No No, you've got it all wrong
The friendly raggie was trying to warn the Plonker in the Mobo where the' putty' was.

Raggies don't make mistakes like that, don't yer know?
 
For the saily boat - NC was crowded and probably not advisable to sail through, but there was very little wind so he wouldn't have been going fast. As for going aground - he's obviously got the 6'6" keel - he'd've been better with my shoal keel! Anyway, saily boats can and do sail in and out of marina berths too - is that just as plonkerish?!

Actually - I think the 'Plonker of the Week' award should go to the pillock who ran his Jetski around a crowded anchorage at 30 knots and ended up having a collision with a Trimaran. He 'wasted' the resources of the CG Helicopter because of his actions.

At least he had the sense to try to stay anonymous and didnt advertise his esteemed RYA credentials of sailing Instructor :rolleyes:
 
I reckon he'd read the following extract from the Bavaria maunual:

"Ven fahren sie uber der wasser shoal und striken komm POW! ze keel vill detach"

So really, it can be viewed as a manufacturing failure in that the shear mechanism let him down.
 
Well - the lad did broadcast his 'fookin' ignorance over the VHF CH16 .... that gets a far wider audience ...

I guess the adult who was driving the DeathSki has a Red Neck, bald head & beer belly too .... (just to keep up with stereotypes!) ;)
 
I'll second that award. It's extremely irritating to see saily boats with perfectly good engines sailing in narrow channels or tight anchorages. It's basically just showing off and going aground is just deserts as far as I'm concerned. However it is amazing how motor boats which were previously objects of contempt suddenly become flavour of the month when a tow off the putty is needed

Heave2 used to be run by a mate, but looks like he has sold the business.

Ken would never have done that, but it may have been deliberate or more likely, the boat was on bare boat charter

Out of interest if you were sailing and I was in the channel in your way would you stand on or give me space accepting that at low water ( 1 hour off) NC is a narrow Channel ?

Secondly , never mind stand on would you tack into me expecting me to alter course ?

Do you think he blames me for his ordeal for not anticipating his course soon enough ?

I was having a beer at the time and didnt notice him in stealth mode.;)

Surely it rather depends - I actually contemplated sailing out of the Creek on Sunday morning - I would've had the engine running though... I didn't in the end because it would've been too much to raise the anchor & main and sail off all at the same time. However, we did raise the sails as we left the creek and didn't start the engine again until we were back in our home channel - and that for me is what it is about - propelling the boat under sail as much as (sensibly) possible.

Last year I tacked through some quite tight moorings on the way back to mine - but I had 2 good crew onboard who were up for the short tacking and a lot of grinding of the winches.
When ever possible I sail back onto the mooring and generally aim to use the engine as little as possible.
It takes a lot of spacial awareness to do sail in confined areas and is good practice if I do ever need to do this sort of manoeuvre - the engine is considered a secondary propulsion method.

If you want some more examples of 'stupidity' although it was probably just ignorance of the situation - quite a number of boats - both motor and sail - motored through the anchorage at a fair speed - whilst there were children swimming in the same area ...

Quite agree. I was anchored in Studland Sunday and saw the helicopter come across and hover quite near before they asked the boats to move out away from everyone else. Hadn't realised what had happened at first.
By all accounts he had a 14 year old lad on board who managed to jump clear in time, and he smashed himself up quite bad,possible amputation.
I was told who it was but wont post names on here. Sorry, but if your going to drive like that,then he got what he deserved.Bloody jet skies around Studland are a nuisance.

I don't know NC well enough to sail in and out anyway. We were in on the lagoon - which is quite wide and IMHO not a narrow channel - certainly not at low water neaps! Anyway - if you're anchored (where's your ball?) or on a mooring buoy then you're not give way anyway.

Tow ?

Takes too long and you run the risk of prop damage, wouldnt you first try a few hump speed passes as you take photos to see if you can wash him off ?

Fireball, I see you're not familiar with the latest colregs which confirm that a mobo "at anchor and displaying the correct shapes or lights, or moored to permanent ground tackle" is nevertheless a give way vessel vis a vis a vessel "equipped with sails whether or not she may be making use of them or of an alternative means of propulsion".

DAKA is well aware of these new rules and I think Tim Bartlett's silence on this issue is only a reflection of the fact that he is preparing a new edition of "The RYA Navigation Handbook" to reflect this recent change.
 
I go by the rule that if I see Daka's boat then he is give way vessel - even if he's in the pub down the road .... ;)
