It does seem strange that on one side of the world we are spending hundreds of millions searching for a plane where the chances of finding survivors was virtually zero from day one.

On the other side you have 4 men who, armed with suitable survival equipment and training could very well be alive as I type this.

Fingers crossed the damage has not already been done by calling off the search when they did.
