I have now shifted all the small versions of the KTL films across to another server that should be as fast as youtube - and will not cost me any bandwidth

They are all available in a small window on each page

I am particularly interested in how fast they start playing and if they run smoothly or hang

on my home connection the results are really variable

I would also love to know if you spot any dead links and literals

feedback from mac sailors and chrome users would be great too

These two pages cover the East coast from the Blackwater to the start of the Broads

Please PM me with any humiliating bits of mis-typing

I'm not sure this is representative as my internet connection is very good. I tend not to watch the small ones but I've just tried a few.

Starts within a second or two, smooth and the download keeps up with the play, so no horrible pauses.

But if your results are variable it could be a whole bunch of things. Time of day you're trying, your internet connection choking etc etc...

I'm a Mac user using Safari, never had a problem with ktl.

Good stuff!

Hi Dylan,
Nice clear Layout to the site. It's a bit slower to load than YouTube, not unacceptably so. Videos still don't play on iPad unlike YouTube ones which do.

damn....

I went over to mp4s because I was told that they work well on ipads, iphones and androids

I am told that the big files look pretty good

good news on the speed though

is that right Searush - not many people can match youtube for speed

D

I can't be bothered with U-tube either, 2 secs of video followed by 30 sec of the little twiddling dots logo. It completely ruins a video. I wouldn't mind that if I was on a free or cheap b/band link, but I have to pay as much as anyone else who could be getting 2-6mb in a city or town.

All working well for me :)

You just need to get a move on as I'm looking forward to you getting to Cornwall & Devon ;) You should have done, Keep Turning Right!

not going to go any faster - can't afford to go any faster

and I shall have white hair by the time I finish

you are correct though - from a marketing point of view I should have started in Cornwall and come along the channel - both sides and then spent much, much more time in the Solent at the beginning rather than waitng until the end

But if it is speed you are after.....

well KTL is probably not your cup of tea.

You are beginning to sound like a Macgregor sailor

Hi Dylan,

Re-subscribed y'day and tried downloading 880mb file of the Alde. Download time estimated at 4.5hrs! Left it downloading with monitor turned off, came back 3 hrs later to check - red light on router! Damn - download failed at about 700mb.

This was done in the morning when normally my internet speeds/reliability are at their best.

Haven't tried again yet, but personally would prefer smaller files to download; either split hi-res files or lower resolution option as per original KTL.

Not happy watching your videos via youtube as video is consistently interrupted as slow download speed fills buffer.

regards

Richard

I was trying to be funny, can't decide whether you are or not?

its odd

I was trying to be funny, can't decide whether you are or not?

I do get quite a few people who join the website - start watching the films - maybe three a night - enough to keep them going for two months

they catch up with me and suddenly the whole project has slowed to a snails pace

so it will certainly take me a long time to get around to Cornwall - but I will get there eventually

- did some tests on the server and the Alde film last night yesterday and it was shifting stuff pretty fast

apologies for getting rid of the small files - the Blip people sent me an email saying that they did not like what I was doing - broke their terms of Service - I re-read them and could not see a problem.... so I put my case and got the same computer generated email back - so I had to do something pronto

I did find that the demand for the mid sized files was small - and they were taking up a lot of space on the server - had to decide to slaughter a few sacred cows - the earlier vlogs in HD have gone too - although they are still available as smaller files - anyway I look much better in a small window but they were taking up space and no-one was accessing them.

I now have many GB of material on the server - and its going to get worse - not sure the KTL model will scale as I accumulate material.

Engine mountings now fallen apart so have to try to get the slug running again....aaaagh!
