Please don\'t fall out over this!

I want to buy some anchorplait for my boat. I would like some advice on length and thickness. The boat is a Westerley 33 which, I think weighs around 8 tons. The anchor chain is 8mm. I sail in the Bristol channel and will be going to Normandy this year, both areas with 10m plus tides. I have 40m of good chain and want to add the anchor plait to that. For situations of extreme depths I carry 100m of three strand nylon to extend the rode. Now I need to decide on the length and diameter of the anchorplait.

Is your 3-ply too small then? Could it do the job instead of buying anchorplait?

FWIW I've now got 70m 10mm chain + 40m 16mm anchorplait in the chainlocker, and another 50m laid rope if necessary, and you know my boat which is similar to yours (though yours has gained a bit of weight it seems /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif )

16mm was originally recommended, and is also the rating for a drogue which has similar forces. Although I wouldn't argue with someone who says 18mm is the stuff to use

Re: Please don\'t fall out over this!

The 3 ply I have is ex-military and I can't open it up to splice it. Also it won't store as well as anchorplait under the chain. I've now decided to buy 50m of 18mm anchorplait to splice onto the 40m of chain. At present I'm having problems finding the checkout on the Outdoorxscape website!
The westerly owners website says my boat weighs ~6.5 tons, I assume this is the "dry" weight so I guess it weighs a little less than 8 tons.

[/ QUOTE ]We've just had our Storm 33 hauled out and the crane's readout said that it was 7.5 tonnes - I reckon that you must be very close.

[--word removed--] jimmy green i have 8 m/m chain + 18 m/m anchor plait has jg heard of chafe

What's to chafe if you have chain on the bottom and chafe protection at the bow roller?

12mm is good on 8mm chain, easy to splice, and means you can fit more in the locker. YOur boat is heavier than ours, but 14mm is as high as I would consider going. 14mm has a breaking strain of 4.2 tonnes - you could damn near hang your boat off it.

Thats interesting, the Westerly website has yours at 5.14 tons and mine at 6.5 tons.

Yes, that is why I guess my boat is a little under 8 tons. I am a little surprised the Storm 33 mentioned earlier was well over two tons above the bare boat weight. Maybe mine is heavier than I think?

Jimmy Greens suggest 10mm or 12mm anchorplait on 8mm chain.

unfortunately that diameter won't work in your 8mm chain windlass, you need 14 or preferably 16mm.

For those purists who reckon you have to have a separate rope windlass - that's true if you use the smaller dimensions.

yacht designers

are incurably optimistic about how light their finished boat will turn out (also crane load-cells, unless calibrated, are inclined to pessimism).

A workable rule-of-thumb is to add 25-30% for a boat used for cruising and 40-50% for liveaboards.

Even keen racing boats are hard pressed to get below 18% over dry displacement weight
