Hi Mobos.

Can I appeal to your better side and ask you lads and lassies to be a bit sympathetic, considerate etc, towards others when passing moorings at the speed that creates a large bow wave and sends moored yachts on pontoons and on bouys into an erratic dance.

It can do a huge amount of damage to topsides, fenders and lines and can also throw things around inside if those onboard are least expecting a wash.
Many thanks
oh, to those who are already considerate, I am extremely grateful,
ta

Sadly someone has really got under Scotty_Twisters skin on this which is a shame.

What is even more a shame is that this sort of thing inevitably turns into an us vs them thing. :(

We all suffer from inconsiderate wash. Sadly those that cause it seem too thick skinned to accept their responsibility, they are probably too much in a hurry to get back to their berth to care about others. I am sure that does not apply to anyone here

We are inevitably thrust into close contact at certin points, mouths of rivers, etc and at those times a large amount of give and take it required. Mobos should be aware of their wash, just keeping to the speed limit is not enough. Raggies should not faff about trying to sail up narrow channels and should get themselves sorted out where there is ample space.

I think everyone should get a life and accept others right to have a life in the way that they choose.

"accept others right to have a life in the way that they choose. "

H,mm problem is tent boat owners in particular appear to be sadly lacking in consideration for others
this one for instance ...6 knots yea right

got few more just like it,different soapdish but always the same canvas and sticks arrangment on top.

just to be clear, to whom was he being inconsiderate as I don't believe there are any moorings on that bit if it's the first leg downstream after Rochester?

And even if he was being inconsiderate, raggie being inconsiderate photos aren't so dramatic. Of course only mobos go that fast, but that doesn't mean all the idiots are in mobos, more so in one subcategory of mobo.

The only them and us here should be decent boaters v prats.

Unfortunately Scotty has a habit of tarring everything with an engine with the same brush and you are (unusually) in danger of falling into the same sort of trap here. I'm meeting Scotty on the 12th October and am looking forward to it, I bet we have far more in common than rants on a forum might suggest. (if not I'll deck him :))

"just to be clear, to whom was he being inconsiderate as I don't believe there are any moorings on that bit if it's the first leg downstream after Rochester"

From where he is and for the next 5 miles down stream is a 6 knot speed limit.

Immediately opposite, but admittedly probably not visible through those opaque plastic side windows that grace most tent boats there is a boat yard containing a dozen or so boats, three mooring trots with small craft/commercial stuff and handful of boats on mud berths including several liveaboards.......and me with my camera ?

This issue does affect both sail and power boats in the same way many other issues on the water do and elessar is write in how it should be but it always manages to become sail v power in the debate even though I'm very sure many have stories about there own kind being just as useless/inconsiderate that get lost when an argument decends into the classic row. Where being sensible about the whole issues would solve it, unfortunately anyone can buy and thus use a boat without (in my view) invaluable and sufficiant training so do not know, or seem to care on some of these issues.

One point I would like to bring up however, and I really dont want to lump people together again but this may, is some powerboaters don't go out of their way and should but when some of us do in my experience it is never acknowledged or seem to be appreciated by sailers but if we do inconvience them it is without doubt met by hostility, sometimes extremely so even if we have tried to move out the way, although i do see that this must be easy not to notice and thus is a lesser point. I justt feel a little courtesy both ways would go a long way and as such i try to appreciate someone tacking early to avoid getting in the way of a busy channel, even though some would not do this as is their right of way, but it makes a difference to all powerboaters as is slowing down below the speed limit to reduce wash when this also cannot be enforced.

Right, after rambling on now and probably boring many of you with what is probably nonsense, i guess what i want to say is we're all out there to enjoy ourselves and our pastimes because we love them and a bit of decency goes a long way and is made worth it (for me at least) if just a few people appreciate it!

Mr.C

i always think that treat others as you would like to be treated, i will always try to keep my wash down when passing other boats moored or not, its not always possible, but you can make an effort, i know on a couple of times ive had a large power boat pass by very fast and close from behind my own vessel, which in turn has sent items onboard flying throughout the boat, and it does get anoying, people need to take notice of what effect there wash has on other boats even if that means reducing the engines revs momentarily just untill your past. boating is supoossed to be a pleasure for everone.

More importantly you might be COOKING

on sunday morning this weekend i went through that exact same stretch of river as in oldgits photo, and while im all for keeping to speed limits and perhaps in complete contrast to my last reply to this thread, in that stretch there was a classic fairy huntsman doing the same thing as the boat in the picture, and it made for a very impressive sight. but i agree his choice of which part of the medway to do this could have been better. sounded great though when it rumbled past.

We saw that beasty as we came under Rochester Bridge on our return from Allington on Sunday afternoon, would have been about 2 ish..

"fairey huntsman as a 'classic' soap-dish"

A boat from a more civilised era when your local chandlery sold rope and silver centurys not chest wigs and medallions.

Yes, but unfortunately he is a inconsiderate ******* who had the smaller boats bouncing off the pontoon at Cuxton, looks like he's getting a name for himself, anyone know where he's berthed?

Well i'm playing on the raggy side of the fence at the mo and being a fairly 'novice' one at that am not likely to be creating any noticeable wash (not without some clever camera with a serious zoom. :D )

I think Old Git's pic doesn't leave much doubt to that one on the speed issue.

On a side note, my 23ft Motorboat would create more wash at 6kts than it would at 20kts. Since at 6 it would be pushing just beyond it's hull length speed and hence burning lots of fuel and pushing lots of wash from its stern.
