But not for marine use, rather for trekking, mountains etc. Any recommendations, as they all seem to be marine.

(Ironic, because when they first came out they were for land based use and some people thought they would do the job at sea, which they didn't. It was a Marshall PLB, 121.5, the CG said they wouldn't respond until there had been two satellite hits which could be a long time).
 
It's the same technology and last time I checked (many, many years!) the same registration process so I use my boat PLB for hiking purposes
 
On the form to register it you list the different activities that you will take it on.

Then it takes them months to complete the registration.
 
It takes them minutes to complete the registration as it’s automated. The paperwork is what takes months but has no bearing on your safety
