PLB or Similar

I must admit I haven't thought through how I'm going to keep the PLB in a position where it will carry on transmitting effectively for hours after I've activated it - maybe an elasticated headband and slip it under there after activation? Any other ideas? Having to hold an arm up out of the water would not be sustainable for a period of hours...

The water would need to be pretty warm for you to be in any fit state to hold it aloft for any length of time.....

The most commonly available PLB with a user replaceable battery is the McMurdo FastFind Max G. Approx £300.

A new battery for self-fitting costs £75 and lasts five years.

I would not discount non-user replaceable devices as the cost between a user replaceable battery and battery replacement service can be less than you think. It can sometimes negilable due to relevant battery prices (eg 220 vs Max-G).

No contention but contact someone like http://www.sartech.com/ for pricing.

I also agree that with a 6 year life you might want a new unit rather than replacement at that time considering age. Pricing and technology also move on along so the future versions might be cheaper and/or have more features.

All this stuff about only getting one with a user replacable battery... well... The simple truth, in case of the Fast Finds is it's cheaper to get the non-user replacable model.

Fast Find 220 * 2, 12 years for £400, or £33 per year.

Fast Find Max G + 1 replacement battery, 10 years for £375, or £37.50 per year. After 10 years for safety critical electronic kit in my view a replacement is over due...

That combined with the fact that with the 220 it gets replaced lock stock after 6 years, giving better reliability and perhaps feature upgrades, makes it a no brainer - unless you need the 48 hour transmit of the Max G.

The manufacturers aren't making these things with non user replaceable batteries in an attempt to fleece anyone. They do it because it lets them build a lighter, smaller, more reliably waterproof and cheaper unit - because there is no need to make provision for latches, extra seals and two lots of casings (one for the battery one for the PLB).
