PLB for £189

[ QUOTE ]
Is there any excuse not to have an EPIRB/PLB now if you do any offshore cruising?

I wasn't aware I needed an excuse to do as I please. or don't please.

are the batteries replaceable? (

Good point , I dont know.

I already have the FastFind plus and I have just replaced the battery.

I suppose in 5 years time most would be really pleased they were throwing it away and hadn't used it !

I expect the battery would last 10 years or so, perhaps in 6 years you would buy another one (even cheaper by then ?) and use the old one as a spare on another crew member ?

You dont but so many boaters get ready for a weekend away or plan a cross channel trip months in advance , only to get spooked at a met office forecast of GF6.

For the sake of £189 you can cast off and feel safe in the knowledge that if it turns out as forecast GF6 and not a F4 as you think you will be quickly plucked out the ogin by India Juliet /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You're offended by a comment like that? How do you get through an average day /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I think the major difference is that a PLB only transmitts for 24 hrs, whereas an EPIRB does so for 5 days or more. In the places most of us go boating we're highly likely to be rescued within a few hours if our position is known, so i'm happy with a PLB. It would be different for blue water sailors of course.

Offended by your post? Not in the least.

Irritated by it? Oh, yes!

Come on Arni, we all knew what he meant! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Twister - He merely pointed out that this type of equipment has been fairly price prohibitive in the past, so now cost is less of an issue. I find that hard to believe this is irritating for anyone. Why not just be cool about it?

Hi Arny,

Sorry , it is one of my irritating habits of me attempting to add a little colour.

I start off with a serious post and get a bit bored , go back to it to add a little colour.
I realise Gale is 8 and above, I also realise that it takes more than an 8 to call for a chopper.

but anyone who sails with a woman on board knows Gale Force complaints start GF4 wind against and by the time it blows up to GF8 you would have jumped overboard, I can take about an hour of

" Oh well it looks like the coast guard was right about the weather then, i told you so "

And then wish I had taken note of the CG weather warning but there are just far too many weather warnings issued on days where the synoptics are perfect.

This PLB allows us to take advantage of the days when the weather looks perfect and covers the odd occasion when the CG gets lucky and issues an accurate weather warning.

Cheers
Pete

Excellent spot DAKA and a good post despite the thread degeneration that came later.

£225 at Lindon Lewis Shepperton for the 210 (the GPS version). I'm going to go and get one tomorrow. Only 6 quid postage too - they're advertising them on ebay under the username thameschandlers

Thanks Daka. Yup, great idea, esp the GPS version. I think that one is the new model - I have the older model which is slightly bigger and imho looks nicer, as it is in a smoother curvier case. They only just changed the model from old to new, so the old ones might still be in stock and avialabe even more cheaply. The old model is 48hrs battery, whereas the new one is 24, so arguably the old one is better. As Nick unirritatingly says, these are a very sensible purchase for anyone who boats offshore even slightly.

Also, I always have one in my pocket when sailing night watches alone, and leave my mobile phone beside sleeping SWMBO/whoever, with the GPS tracking set to fine. I figure that if I fall in, the EPIRB/PLB starts up, and the CG will phone my mobile, waking up SWMBO, who will then know I've fallen in, and turn the boat around, follow the GPS biscuit crumb trial and rescue me.
