I have had a worn Cutless bearing replaced. There seems to be about 1mm (unmeasured) play in the prop shaft at the bearing, which was replaced by a bearing extractor and replacer device. Shaft dia is 25mm. The free movement is from the shaft resting in the bearing, uppwards till it pushes against the top

Should there be less play than this, pls ? (The old bearing had approx 2.5mm movement, and rattled under way.

TIA

The quoted figure for clearance of a new bearing for my 1" shaft is 0.13-0.23mm. Is it possible you have been supplied with a bearing for a 1" shaft (25.4mm)?

The 2.5mm of original movement represents quite a lot of wear, some of which could well be on the shaft. Were you able to measure the actual shaft diameter at the bearing position?

Is it a brass or plastic body? The plastic ones (Tufnol?) swell in water and are made with excess clearance that closes in the water. It seems a bit hit or miss to me, as the only one I ever used closed so much that the shaft barely turned.

Thanks Vyv. There seems to be a metal body but it looked stainless. I shall have to check carefully before I wander over to the engineering workshop, wearing a concerned expression.
