The Hunter Europa I have just bought came to me with the jib still on the furling foil. I have just found out why! Whenever I have bought one of these furling systems in the past they came with a packet of rectangular black "slides" which fitted in the foil groove so you could fit sail shackles to them. Whoever had the boat before me appears to have hammered mainsail slugs up the groove! Help, where do I buy the proper ones? Has anybody got some lying about that they never used? Thanks, Peter.

IIRC the 608 is designed to take a luff rope rather than slides. If the genoa takes slugs then it needs modifying; a quick job for a sailmaker but the cut of the sail may need modifying and you may want to consider a foam insert to improve reefing. I think :D

Your best bet is to ask Kirk at Down Marine in Dundonald, not far from you.
they used to stock a lot of Plastimo and its like an aladin's cave.
Or as Rigger says get a luff tape fitted to your jib, however if the slugs really have been hammered in then that may allow the luff tape to jump out of the grove, in which case you may need a new grove insert.

Not come across sail slugs for Platimo furlers .... only ever see the sail fitted with a luff rope up the groove

Are they peculiar to the twin groove, T, version which has no insert like the S version?

Plastimo catalogue here, but I see nothing in it. http://ecat.plastimo.com/EN2014/appli.htm

Any chandler or sailmaker should have the ordinary round sail slugs if that is what you want, likre these Allen ones http://www.allenbrothers.co.uk/item.asp?prod_id=29&cat_id=6

I've just checked my (rather elderly) Plastimo catalogue. The 608T is designed to take a 5mm luff rope in either of the two grooves. The 608S is designed to take a 6.5mm luff rope in the single groove. There is no mention of slides for either of the models; though perhaps a third party may have supplied them.

A 5mm slug does sound quite small, but it does sound like a bit of a botch if bigger slugs have been hammered in.

Is it these? I found 2:

They came from Plastimo with a 608s that I fitted to the boat before last. You're welcome to them, if I dig around deeper I might be able to turn up a few more - I think I had 5 or 6 left over. The rest were sewn onto the old jib so that it could be used in an emergency and went with the boat.

I did the same with my N0 3 Genoa, fitted slugs to the luff of the sail and used Plastimo furling (Sigma 33C). However I could never get the tension high enough on the luff. There was always a lot of fluttering on the leading edge of the sail.
Must be to do with the fact that a luff rope works on the most extreme foward part of the sail. Using slugs the tension is aplied about 2" back from the luff of the sail so cannot apply as much.

You could buy a length of 5mm luff tape and cut it up to make some slugs but.........
You could even use both grooves to double it all up but........

TBH I think you're going to have think about biting the bullet

You seem to be able to get them from seateach for the S series - mine came with some and I may use them to hoist my smallest hank on jib sometime - but I dunno if they will go up the groove for the T. The only difference between the S and the T (I think) is the T has 2 slots.

Spoke to SeaTeach and they said Plastimo dont do slides for the T series. Now I will have to find someone selling 5mm slugs. I have searched Ronstan and Holt sites but no luck so far,any ideas?

The grooves on the twin are 5mm wide. The groove on the single is 6.5mm

View attachment 41053A quick update if i may. After extensive research (Google!) I cannot find a manufacturer of 5mm slides/slugs. So I have gone down Riggers way. I bought 1 metre of 5mm lufftape (plus webbing to fit inside) cost /£5 and have started to make my own stitching with black (sorry, its all I have) waxed cotton. I will attach piccy. Should do the trick, what do you think? If it works and the foils have not been damaged by the force fed slugs I shall of course get a proper luff tape sewn on to the sail. Thank you all for your input, Peter.

Before you make too many I would attach and try a couple. They look like they will try to pivot and jam in the groove. Hope I'm wrong but try it out.

My gut reaction is that the eyelet should be nearer to the 5mm bit so that there is more material between the eyelet and the edge of the triangle. At present you only have about 10mm, which may not be strong enough.
But, as others have said, try them out and see what happens. Good luck with it.

Just wondering how you got on with your lufftape slides?
I have also tried to get hold of the Plastimo slides (for use with the 608S furler) and just arrived home to see that Marine Megastore, have delivered the other items in my order (after two weeks waiting) but not the Plastimo slides. Despite my 3 attempts to contact their customer services, I still haven't got an answer as to whether they can get hold of them or not. (I've never known a company do as much as they do to avoid talking with customers). Tomorrow I will call Seateach to see if they have any or not.

I also realise I could go down the adding lufftape route, but I prefer hank on, if it can be made to work with the furler - it gives me more options. I can easily change headsails, I can furl/reef when absolutely necessary.
