Have been losing fluid out of my plastimo contest 101 compass, and have just removed it from the boat, it has a large crack in the top of the dome, unrepairable so it needs replacement...

It is a tactician race compass, it was already on boat when i bought it, but i wish to get a normal degree carded compass..

Just looked on the plastimo site and the compass card has a variety of colours and lighting options, I am swayed towards the red card and white light. I do a minimum of night sailing, couple of hours either side of dawn/dusk..

It has red, white and yellow cards and red and white light options.

What would be the overall best choice of compass lighting for night sailing

I have the red card with white light. I ended up putting some red insulation tape over the bulb to calm it down a little. I was worried that the white writing might be obscured by this but I am quite happy with the results I obtained.

I do appear to have too much sensitivity of light at night ending up turning all lights or gear off around the helm unless needed, hence the tape.

The red / white is nice during the day and the sun has never dazzled it for me.

hope that helps.

white light is a bad idea cause it desensitises the rods in the eyes, and thus reduces your nightsight.

white card, red light!

But I find the red light is only good for when its properly dark..... for dusk, i'd personally go for a white light....

Fine if you only boat at dusk. I love sailing at night!

They have started bringing out LED lit versions which have a more robust lighting system than those with incandescent bulbs. Worth paying a bit more for that version ?

I bought a second hand Silva 100 bulkhead compass to replace a Contest 101 on basis that it had the same footprint and it doesnt! Almost, but not quite. After struggling for a while to get it to fit , gave up, brought a new 101 (which has been fine) & sold the 100 to Webcraft! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gifAt a loss /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
