Ooh it's an anchor thread............Is the kobra 2 any good? I'm looking to replace my Fortress for something that is
A. Good value for money
B. Will reset on the turn of tide
C. Won't come up with mud blocking any moving parts
D. Will live happily on the bow roller of my Beneteau First
E. Re-read A.

What size do you think I need, 12 or 14kg?

The Kobra II has a good reputation. Flukes very similar to a Delta, shank a bit long and curved, may give stowage problems on some bow rollers. Plough anchors generally work well on sandy bottoms but will drag in soft mud. Conversely, your Fortress will hold very well in soft mud, so keep it for forays to the East Coast.
 
We have a Kobra II and it's great. Used it for two years in lots of East Coast mud and Solent sand. So far it's either held solid first time or not set at all. The 4 or 5 times it's not set it's come up covered in weed which suggests it may not be good at biting through weed. Self stows easy peesy, we sleep soundly with it set. Only gripe is that the sizing table is rubbish, there's no way I'd trust our size and displacement to the anchor size quoted, we went two sizes larger and in hindsight I'd have gone 3 sizes up. It's very good value as well.
 
Is the Kobra 2 an improvement on the Delta? In other words is it worth upgrading to it from a Delta. Just wondering as we can't fit a roll bar type anchor under the bowsprit.
 
We used our Kobra 2 quite a lot this summer.

Had a to have a couple of goes to get it set at Camaret. One one attempt because it went into thick weed, on the other because there was only a thin layer of sand over the rock below.

Everywhere else we stopped from there on South it bit first time every time and didn't budge an inch overnight on a sand/shingle bottom in a full gale. I'm confident it would have held on for as long as we'd wanted to stay put, but in the end we retreated to a marina for comfort's sake.

It's only 16kilos on a 40 foot boat due to a larger one not fitting the roller without mods, so really rather undersized. When I've modded the roller, I'll have little hesitation in buying a larger one... not that there really seems a need.
 
I replaced my elderly CQR copy with a Kobra 2 two years ago on my 32 ft Artekno H 323. To date it has behaved impeccably giving no cause for concern.
I chose the 12 kg version deeming it to adequate for a boat weighing approx 3 ton.Priced at about £100 I reckon it was good value. Sits on the bow roller ok with a pin through the shank to stop it bouncing out.
 
The Kobra 2 has always come out well in anchor tests, probsably the best of the plough-type hooks, and at a very attractive price. I'd have bought one last year but supply problems with the demise of Plastimo knocked that on the head.
 
Wiggy, I have a B323 and early this put a Delta 16 on to replace an older CQR copy. I think our bow folders will be pretty much the same, so if you want a photo of how it sits let me know. I can take some photos this weekend.

They are so similar, other than the shank length, that a marked improvement seems most unlikely. For the majority of occasions a Delta is a perfectly good anchor and I would not have replaced mine with a Rocna except for an unfortunate incident in a very soft mud bottom.

A photo would be fantastic, from a little Googleing our bow rollers look very similar.
 
I used a Delta for a year - fantastic anchor. My only gripe was that it was going to require a bit of fettling of the bow roller to sit properly.
Unfortunately, some toe rag decided they wanted one too but didn't fancy paying for it, so helped themselves. I replaced it with a Kobra II and must say that it is easily as good as the Delta, with the added bonus of sitting perfectly on the roller.
I have used it along the North East coast of Scotland and on the West coast around Mull / Oban etc. First time every time in up to 40 knots of shifting wind and tides. The chart plotter described a perfect circle !
 
Actually, I have one slight gripe with the Kobra. There's not enough meat in the shank for me to feel comfortable drilling it to accept the securing pin as already fitted to my bow roller. That said, I lash it back to the windlass within the chain locker, and thanks to it and the roller's shape, there's now way it's going anywhere even without a fixing further forward.

Consider also the Fob Rock which looks like the Kobra 2 but in recent French tests had nearly twice the holding power. Kobras apparently are made in China.
